In DSM-IV, the relationships between physical illness and psychological factors are grouped under the classifications 'Somatoform Disorders' and 'Psychological Factors Affecting Medical Conditions'(PFAMC). This volume introduces the 'Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research' (DCPR) as a new proposal for the PFAMC section of DSM-V. The DCPR approach focuses on psychological characteristics of patients presenting symptoms across different medical disorders related to the clinically relevant psychosocial constructs of abnormal illness behavior, i.e. somatization, demoralization, type A behavior, alexithymia, conversion, and irritability. The distinct DCPR categories are consistent with concepts expressed by outstanding authors in psychosomatic medicine and are therefore suggested as specifiers of PFAMC for the future DSM-V. The volume includes updates, reviews and empirical findings on psychological factors affecting various disorders in different clinical settings (endocrinology, gastroenterology, oncology, dermatology, eating disorders, consultation psychiatry). It is essential reading for psychiatrists, psychologists and physicians interested in psychosomatic medicine, and provides the basic tools for the diagnosis of DCPR conditions.

In the diagnosis and treatment of physical illness, limited attention is given to psychosocial factors related to the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of symptoms. Over the past thirty years, however, practitioners have increasingly begun to acknowledge the importance of psychosocial factors to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of apparently biomedical symptoms. DSM-IV alludes to psychological factors affecting a person's medical condition, and thereby infers an association between the factors and physical illness. Understanding the connection between biomedical and coexisting mental symptoms may provide new cues to a more accurate diagnosis and treatment of organic as well as mental disorders. This dissertation is an exploratory analysis of relationships between psychosocial factors and apparently biomedical illness. Patients treated in health care agencies are surveyed for their experience of treatment. Marital and family therapy is suggested as an appropriate modality in the delivery of health care. Patients may benefit from a biopsychosocial approach to treatment for many apparently general medical conditions, both acute and chronic.

"This represents the first textbook explicitly to join interpretation of the ICF with that of DSM-IV-TR in clinical cases. In fact, Professor Petersonís book reads as though it were a helpful crosswalk between the Classification and the DSM, which is innovative."--ICF Newsletter "Peterson isÖthe most qualified individual in the field of rehabilitation counseling and rehabilitation psychology to write this text...He thoroughly understands the ICF as a model with great utility for the field of rehabilitation counseling." --David A. Rosenthal, PhD, CRC Chairperson, Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education University of Wisconsin-Madison "This proposed text has significance for assisting in the needed universal conceptual framework for improving public policy and service delivery systems for individuals with mental health-related issues." --Susanne Bruyere, PhD Cornell University This textbook focuses on psychopathology as classified in the DSM-IV-TR, and discusses how it can be integrated into the ICF to assist mental health professionals while diagnosing and treating people with mental disorders. A perfect reference for students, the book serves as a natural bridge between the DSM-IV-TR and the ICF. Students will learn the utility of using the ICF's biopsychosocial approach for conceptualizing mental health functioning (body functions and structures), disability (activity limitations and participation restrictions), and contextual factors (environmental and personal factors). The ICF's collaborative approach presents students with a conceptual framework that guides the selection of appropriate interventions and informs the evaluation of treatment efficacy. Key Features: Develops knowledge and understanding of mental health functioning and disability based on the ICF and related diagnoses within the DSM-IV-TR Applies the ICF conceptual framework to planning mental health assessment and related interventions, and evaluating treatment outcomes Integrates diagnostic information from the DSM-IV-TR with the ICF's classification of functioning, disability, and health
