BOOK EXCERPT:
The study of international relations, has traditionally been dominated by Western ideas and practices, and marginalized the voice and experiences of the non-Western states and societies. As the world moves to a "post-Western" era, it is imperative that the field of IR acquires a more global meaning and relevance. Drawing together the work of renowned scholar Amitav Acharya and framed by a new introduction and conclusion written for the volume, this book exposes the narrow meaning currently attached to some of the key concepts and ideas in IR, and calls for alternative and broader understandings of them. The need for recasting the discipline has motivated and undergirded Acharya's own scholarship since his entry into the field over three decades ago. This book reflects his own engagement, quarrels and compromise and concludes with suggestions for new pathways to a Global IR- a forward-looking and inclusive enterprise that is reflective of the multiple and global heritage of IR in an changing and interconnected world. It is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about the history, development and future of international relations and international relations theory.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Introducing new theoretical developments to the study of the European Union's international capacity, this book moves beyond the traditionally narrow focus on the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and instead considers the foreign policies of the Member States and processes such as enlargement as part of a broadly EU foreign policy. The book offers readers a theoretical map from which they can orient themselves and assess the comparative utility of various approaches to their own studies

BOOK EXCERPT:
At a time when global civilization stands at the crossroads comes a book that helps to understand the emerging challenges, from global warming and other environmental issues, global poverty, free trade, foreign debt burdens, and the expanding global economy, to the worsening conditions in many nations. // The book takes a look at the causes of the crises that have developed over centuries, and describes how, even as the miracles of technology have unfolded, the model of progress itself has proven to be disruptive and damaging. The book shares a vision of how we can help re-vitalize and re-direct global society. From environmental rejuvenation to democratic forms of progress, from the reform of the United Nations to greater international democracy, and from solutions to social problems to a new ethics needed for life and the planet, the book lays out interesting possibilities. For those who want things to change, beneficial directions are provided. For others it questions many pre-conceived notions, and provides refreshingly different perspectives.
