This book examines how the Treaty of Peace with Japan, a momentous agreement that delineated postwar order in the Pacific, was negotiated between Japan and 48 other nations in 1951. Even though the treaty was created to legally end the state of war between Japan and its Pacific War enemies, many other considerations - some of which had hardly anything to do with the Pacific War - were involved. The US-Soviet rivalry was the most representative, but this was not the only factor. For instance, the decision to invite Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as signatories was determined based on French colonial interests, Indochinese yearning for independence and the need for French contribution in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Similarly, German reparations settlements after the First and Second World Wars impacted Japanese reparations settlement. Meanwhile, the commercial terms of the treaty were informed by the Great Depression and its legacies. This book addresses these aspects of the peace treaty that are hitherto not sufficiently elaborated upon in existing studies. Highlighting the importance of the treaty for shaping postwar East Asia and international relations in the region to the present day, this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of post-war Japan, International relations, and the Cold War.

This book examines the theme of human–animal interactions contextualized against the idea of the Anthropocene. From its insistence that Japan should favour diplomatic normalization with the Republic of China over the People’s Republic of China in 1952, through its role, via the Security Treaty, of keeping the ‘cap in the bottle’ of Japanese militarism, to weighing in on the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands dispute between China and Japan, the United States has played a pivotal, and at times controversial, role in the development of China-Japan relations since the end of World War II. By extension, US influence on China-Taiwan and Taiwan-Japan relations, in addition to its impact on the efforts of various actors to construct a Northeast Asian regional community, continues to pose important questions about the nature of the US role in East Asia in the 21st century. US-China Rivalry offers a holistic analysis of the unfolding of US-China competition in the Indo-Pacific, using a novel theory called neo-offensive realism. It synthesises quantitative and qualitative data to examine the intensification of US-China competition across the Indo-Pacific in recent years, with a focus on why the competition is intensifying under the interplay of system-level and unit-level forces; where the competition is unfolding across states and quasi-states in the region; how the competition is conducted through economic and military influence mechanisms; and whither the competition is developing in the future.

In the last few decades, Southeast Asia has become generally more peaceful and more prosperous, with progress in economic development, regional cooperation and integration. ASEAN in particular plays a leading role within and beyond the region in promoting multilateral cooperation in both security and economic matters. All these developments progress amid increasing hegemonic competition between the US and China for regional dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. According to the realist viewpoint of international politics, Southeast Asian states can do nothing but choose sides at the expense of international political autonomy in order to maintain their national interests. Tang argues, however, that in fact there exists an opportunity for Southeast Asian states to simultaneously reinforce their military security, economic development and international political autonomy in face of the US-China hegemonic competition. Drawing on the ideas of power transition theory and recent works of capitalist peace, Tang argues that small states can exploit the competition between great powers to make economic gains and ensure security while maintaining their autonomy. He outlines the necessity of cooperation among these small states and of economic liberalization for the effectiveness of this reinforcing dynamics, applying policy and econometric analyses to a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data.
