As a child, I was captivated by tales of spooks, haunted houses, wraiths, and specters. Stories of eerie experiences, clanking chains, ghostly apparitions, and unsettling sounds always held me spellbound and breathless. My time in editorial offices revealed that I wasn’t alone in my love for mystery stories. The desire to explore the existence veiled by death is equally potent in both old age and youth. Men, women, and children alike seek thrills and that spine-tingling sensation when reading about visitors from beyond the grave. This volume features some of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous weird tales. In “The Black Cat,” mystery and the supernatural intertwine seamlessly, and the feline protagonist behaves naturally throughout. The story might even be true—it’s the telling that places it fittingly within this collection. Guy de Maupassant, the clever French writer, contributes two effective pieces, and lesser-known authors also offer memorable stories. Each of the twenty-five tales deserves close reading. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in ghost stories. High-class magazines have published supernatural incidents, and renowned writers have turned their attention to this captivating form of literature. Whether or not the reader believe in ghosts, he cannot fail to be interested in this little book. Without venturing to express a positive opinion either way, I will only say with Hamlet: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

Under The Bed Creeping

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From Puritan tracts and chapbooks to fairy tales and Victorian poems, from zombies and werewolves to ghosts and vampires, the gothic has become an important part of children's literature. This book explores how Gothicism is crucial in helping children progress through different stages of growth and development. It examines five famous texts--Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market, Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio, Neil Gaiman's Coraline, three versions of Little Red Riding Hood, and J.M. Barrie's play and then novel Peter and Wendy--incorporating renowned psychologist Erik Erikson's landmark theories on psychosocial stages of development. By linking a particular stage to each of the aforementioned texts, it becomes clearer how anxiety and terror are just as important as happiness and wonder in fostering maturity, achieving a sense of independence and fulfilling one's self-identity. Gothic elements give shape to children's fears, which is precisely how children are able to defeat them, and through their interactions with the ghosts and goblins that inhabit fantasy worlds, children come to better understand their own world, as well as their own lives.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. These facts few psychologists will dispute, and their admitted truth must establish for all time the genuineness and dignity of the weirdly horrible tale as a literary form… As may naturally be expected of a form so closely connected with primal emotion, the horror-tale is as old as human thought and speech themselves. H. P. Lovecraft Horror intends to create an eerie and frightening atmosphere for the reader. Prevalent elements include ghosts, demons, vampires, werewolves, ghouls, the Devil, witches, monsters, dystopian and apocalyptic worlds, serial killers, cannibalism, psychopaths, cults, dark magic, Satanism, the macabre, gore, and torture. On The Edge Of The Pack

BOOK EXCERPT:

On The Edge of the Pack Book two of the On The Edge series Olivia Mayor's journey continues as she becomes part of the mythical world. After meeting Cliff Mark's enemy in On The Edge of the Forest, Olivia is positive that she is going to meet her death. She finds Cliff to save Mark, but the unexpected happens. Rather than the monster she is expecting, Cliff seems to be kind, but that does not fool Olivia. She is wary when he makes her a deal: become his and he'll stop trying to kill Mark as well as all the other wolves'. Under the circumstances, Olivia has no choice but to accept. Just as she accepts, the unexpected happens and Olivia becomes the very thing that she always thought was mythical: a werewolf. Struggling with the new feelings and emotions in her body, Olivia is faced with many more obstacles and challenges'. Danger lurks around every corner from the consequences of marrying Mark, to child bearing and wolf hunts. Time after time, her family is endangered. When a wolf hunt starts unexpectedly, they leave their spacious home and move deeply into the forest of Pinecrossing where Olivia learns of a horrible truth: her brother died. Attending her brother's funeral in Idaho has consequences, but then again, doesn't everything? This is where Olivia's journey really begins as, after his funeral, she begins to tell all of her family members' good-bye. When she intends to do this with her sister, a secret is unraveled that will yet again forever change Olivia's world: Cliff. He was back again, taunting Olivia. Playing games was a favorite of his, and Olivia prepared herself in every way possible to fight him to protect her family. Along the way truths are uncovered about her past. Truth about how exactly much her parents knew about this life; about the genes she carried. She also learns another family secret that will leave many questions answered, while others arise. Every day, trouble gets closer and closer. After Olivia's sister, Christine, is threatened, Olivia is faced with yet another choice. She can either become a monster Cliff's and have no contact what-so-ever with her family, or she can sit back and watch as one by one, her family is murdered. Is she strong enough to save her family? Or is she selfish enough to put them in danger?
