BOOK EXCERPT:
In the modern age, where information is plentiful but selection and analysis elusive, Schott's Almanac presents a unique biography of the year: from Hillary Clinton's and Barack Obama's historic presidential runs to George Bush's continued infatuation with "the Google," from marriage and crime statistics to the incidence of shark bites worldwide, and from the Nobel Prize for Literature to the Bad Sex in Fiction award, Schott's Almanac distills information and opinions critically, giving readers an accurate biography of the year past. Practical, entertaining, and utterly compulsive, Schott's Almanac eschews endless lists and tiny type to present an elegantly designed and utterly compulsive selection of the year's events.

In In Praise of Profanity, Michael Adams offers a provocative, unapologetic defense of profanity, arguing that we consistently fail to appreciate it as a legitimate means of expressing ourselves.

BOOK EXCERPT:
China’s rise and processes of Sinicization suggest that recombination of new and old elements rather than a total rupture with or return to the past is China’s likely future. In both space and time, civilizational politics offers the broadest social context. It is of particular salience in China. Reification of civilizations into simple categories such as East and West is widespread in everyday politics and common in policy and academic writings. This book’s emphasis on Sinicization as a specific instance of civilizational processes counters political and intellectual shortcuts and corrects the mistakes to which they often lead. Sinicization illustrates that like other civilizations China has always been open to variegated social and political processes that have brought together many different kinds of peoples adhering to very different kinds of practices. This book tries to avoid the reifications and celebrations that mark much of the contemporary public debate about China’s rise. It highlights instead complex processes and political practices bridging East and West that avoid easy shortcuts. The analytical perspectives of this book are laid out in Katzenstein’s opening and concluding chapters. They are explored in six outstanding case studies, written by widely known authors, which over questions of security, political economy and culture. Featuring an exceptional line-up and representing a diversity of theoretical views within one integrative perspective, this work will be of interest to all scholars and students of international relations, sociology and political science. BOOK EXCERPT:
British and Irish cuisine, rich in tradition and flavour, has faced challenges in adapting to the modern world. Renowned for its hearty ingredients and lengthy cooking times, this style of cooking often clashes with today’s fast-paced lifestyle, where time is precious and health consciousness prevails. Moreover, these cuisines are known for their quirky and sometimes whimsical dish names. This cookbook celebrates the unique and oddly named dishes of British and Irish fare, offering just under 200 recipes for culinary exploration. Each recipe is preceded by a story delving into the dish’s history and distinct features. While some dishes remain widely recognized and cherished classics, like ‘the full English,’ ‘colcannon,’ ‘toad in the hole,’ and ‘bubble and squeak,’ others are regional favourites, such as ‘scouse’ in Merseyside and ‘parmo’ in the North East. There are also lesser-known, rarely eaten delicacies like ‘apple hat’ and ‘collier's foot.’ For those intrigued by the misleading, such as ‘squab pie’ (made with lamb, not pigeon) or ‘Glamorgan sausages’ (meatless, cheese-based sausages), this book is a treasure trove of culinary surprises. And for the more adventurous, how about trying ‘toenail pudding’ or a slice of ‘fly cemetery’? This book promises to pique your curiosity and introduce you to the charming eccentricities of British and Irish cooking.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Jewish anthropological beliefs during the Hellenistic-Roman period are an important but previously neglected area of biblical exegesis and Jewish studies. In an effort to address this deficiency, this volume brings together 20 essays related to the subject of sin and death, with special emphasis on integrating material from neighboring cultures. Thus, the volume provides an exemplary foundation for further research on ancient Jewish anthropology.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"Knowledge is of two kinds," said Samuel Johnson in 1775. "We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it." Today we think of Wikipedia as the source of all information, the ultimate reference. Yet it is just the latest in a long line of aggregated knowledge--reference works that have shaped the way we've seen the world for centuries. You Could Look It Up chronicles the captivating stories behind these great works and their contents, and the way they have influenced each other. From The Code of Hammurabi, the earliest known compendium of laws in ancient Babylon almost two millennia before Christ to Pliny's Natural History; from the 11th-century Domesday Book recording land holdings in England to Abraham Ortelius's first atlas of the world; from Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language to The Whole Earth Catalog to Google, Jack Lynch illuminates the human stories and accomplishment behind each, as well as its enduring impact on civilization. In the process, he offers new insight into the value of knowledge.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This significant volume moves music-historical research in the direction of deconstructing the national grand narratives in music history, of challenging the national paradigm in methodology, and thinking anew about cultural traffic, cultural transfer and cosmopolitanism in the musical past. The chapters of this book confront, or subject to some kind of critique, assumptions about the importance of the national in the musical past. The emphasis, therefore, is not so much on how national culture has been constructed, or how national cultural institutions have influenced musical production, but, rather, on the way the national has been challenged by musical practices or audience reception.
