The book entitled Teaching English as A Foreign Language (TEFL) in Indonesian Context: A Practical Guide is a comprehensive book of TEFL which provides essential information for language educators and practitioners who want to be a competent EFL teachers. Voices in Texts and Contexts presents different perspectives of “voice”, a concept that emerges from language choices, social and cultural phenomena, and psychology. In weaving a tapestry of linguistic experiences, from analyses of language phenomena including localised English to explanations of human behaviour, this book offers insights into how we use language, construct discourse, and express ourselves in light of selected texts and specific contexts.

The 1st International Conference on Language and Language Teaching (ICLLT 2019) is a bi-annual international conference hosted by the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training Universitas Tidar. The 1st ICLLT 2019 brings a central issue on "New Directions of Language and Language Teaching in Facing Industrial Revolution Era 4.0". The conference serves researchers, academics, and practitioners to present the research findings, share thoughts, and experiences to improve the quality of language teaching in Indonesia. The conference invited four keynotes speakers: Hywel Coleman (University of Leeds, United Kingdom), Dr. Maizatulliza Muhammad (Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia), Dr. Robbie Lee Sabnani (National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), and Dr. Dwi Winarsih (Universitas Tidar, Indonesia). This year's conference invited presenters with 56 articles were selected to be published. It was also a great pleasure to work with the presenters for presenting excellent papers, the committee for the hard work in organizing the conference, and all parties who have been contributing to the conference and the publication of the proceedings. We also expect that the future ICLLT will be a successful event, as indicated by the increasing contributions presented in this volume.

This proceedings book captures a wide range of timely themes for readers to be able to foresee the digital era's impact on English teaching in non-English speaking countries. English used in the global environment, the frequent mobile communication, and the use of AI-based translators are bringing about dramatic changes in our English language learning and teaching. Indonesia has an extreme diversity of linguistic wealth, with 707 languages by one count, or 731 languages and more than 1,100 dialects in another estimate, spoken by more than 600 ethnicities spread across 17,504 islands in the archipelago. Smaller, locally used indigenous languages jostle for survival alongside Indonesian, which is the national language, regional lingua francas, major indigenous languages, heritage languages, sign languages and world languages such as English, Arabic and Mandarin, not to mention emerging linguistic varieties and practices of language mixing. How does the government manage these languages in different domains such as education, the media, the workplace and the public while balancing concerns over language endangerment and the need for participation in the global community? Subhan Zein asserts that superdiversity is the key to understanding and assessing these intricate issues and their complicated, contested and innovative responses in the complex, dynamic and polycentric sociolinguistic situation in Indonesia that he conceptualises as superglossia. This offers an opportunity for us to delve more deeply into such a context through the language and superdiversity perspective that is in ascendancy. Zein examines emerging themes that have been dominating language policy discourse including status, prestige, corpus, acquisition, cultivation, language shift and endangerment, revitalisation, linguistic genocide and imperialism, multilingual education, personnel policy, translanguaging, family language policy and global English. These topical areas are critically discussed in an integrated manner against Indonesia’s elaborate socio-cultural, political and religious backdrop as well as the implementation of regional autonomy. In doing so, Zein identifies strategies for language policy to help inform scholarship and policymaking while providing a frame of reference for the adoption of the superdiversity perspective on polity-specific language policy in other parts of the world.
