Waste Treatment In The Biotechnology Agricultural And Food Industries

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book and its sister book (Volume 1 ) of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering (HEE) series have been designed to serve as a mini-series covering waste treatment in biotechnology, agricultural and food industries . It is expected to be of value to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, to designers of sustainable biological resources systems, and to scientists and researchers. The aim of these books is to provide information on bio-environmental engineering, and to serve as a basis for advanced study or specialized investigation of the theory and analysis of various agricultural and natural resources systems. Volume 2 covers topics on: (a) application of secondary flotation-filtration and coagulant recycle for improvement of a pulp mill primary waste treatment facility; (b) management of solid and hazardous wastes; (c) microbial enzymes for wastewater treatment; (d) a multi-criteria approach to appropriate treatment technology selection for water reclamation; (e) chemicals used in agriculture: hazards and associated toxicity issues; (f) biochar for adsorptive removal of pharmaceuticals from environmental water; (g) treatment of palm oil mill effluent; (h) treatment and management of solid waste by incineration; (i) technologies for removal of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from industrial effluents and/or potable water sources; (j) treatment of healthcare waste.

Environmental Treatment Technologies For Municipal Industrial And Medical Wastes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Environmental Treatment Technologies for Municipal, Industrial and Medical Wastes will provide the reader with a simple and clear path to analyze the full range of options to manage/treat any solid, hazardous, or medical waste problems/issues at hand. This book aims to disseminate information on available remediation treatment technologies to developing and developed countries. It also includes adequate information on all available treatment technologies for different types and categories of waste (hazardous, non-hazardous municipal solid waste, and medical waste). The technologies are grouped into the following categories: Containment technology; Soil washing; Thermal treatment; Vapor extraction; Bioremediation including Phytoremediation; Plasma/Incineration; Other Physical/Chemical treatments. It enlightens the effect of emissions during remediation activities on climate change and suggests measures to identify and control such emissions. It also covers the application of remote sensing technologies with examples and the impending issues of proper disinfection and disposal of COVID-19 related waste pertaining to the current pandemic. It is intended for almost anyone — ranging from college students and early career professionals interested in environmental pollution control, to graduate students, researchers and experienced professionals. This book will: cover several recent developments on various treatment technologies, including in situ applications and their emission/migration control methods including remote sensing technologies; deal with municipal solid waste, their treatment/disposal methods, recycling, and reuse in addition to the hazardous and medical waste management program; assist civil/environmental engineering students and local community organizations in evaluating the impact of an industry and its associated waste produced on-site; and cover how best to treat/manage the waste to arrive at a safe operation without impacting human health and the local environment.

International Technologies For Hazardous Waste Site Cleanup

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"From the Introduction: " The purpose of this program is to identify and assess international technologies that could be utilized for hazardous waste site remediation within the United States. This report summarizes the results of Phase I of this program, which identified international alternative technologies potentially applicable to Superfund site remediation. All remedial technologies identified as a result of the Phase I activities are described in this report. Recommendations are also provided for further study in Phase II which will focus on the most promising international technologies. General Approach The technical approach for Phase I focused on the location, acquisition, and interpretation of existing data, studies, and related documentation for remedial technologies. Data were obtained through a comprehensive literature survey and telephone contracts / interviews with agencies, industries, vendors, research groups, and others involved in the development and marketing of technologies. Emphasis was placed on technologies that have been developed and / or applied in Europe, Japan and Canada, because of the promise that these areas have more advanced hazardous waste programs in place. An important part of the Phase I activity was the assembly and review of information that EPA scientific personnel have obtained in their foreign travel assignments or through contact with foreign consultants or academics. A list of EPA personnel that were contact for input to the Phase I technology identification activity is provided in Section 4, along with non-EPA contacts . . . .
