The collective message of this compendium is caution: don't put excessive pressure on African institutions. Sayre Schatz, Ravi Gulhati and Satya Yalamanchili, and Raymond Hopkins, in particular, argue that laissez-faire won't work in Africa; that reforms must be carefully sequenced; and that evidence on the relationship between food subsidies and declining agricultural productivity is scanty. Foreign Affairs This collection of essays was assembled to address the problems of Africa from a variety of perspectives. The contributors have attempted to ask some basic but up-to-now unaddressed questions and to reframe many of the issues. The overall approach is intentionally interdisciplinary. Although recognizing that Africa's economic decline has resulted from poorly designed policy, the contributors also attempt to place that policy in its historical and cultural context. Similarly, they establish a comparative perspective for Africa's economic performance, and point to outside forces that have been overlooked. Finally, the contributors investigate some key issues in agricultural policy, such as decentralization, the role of women, and food subsidies.

In 1963 there was a French agronomist named René Dumont who published a book: False start in Africa in this book it explains the economic and development difficulties that Africa was facing so since then what is the real situation of Africa today? The book is a theory-led conceptual account of the contemporary challenges that face African Development and the factors that may interact and influence at the interface of Africa development. African natural resources play vital roles in the world economic by providing the raw materials that most of the industrialized countries need for manufacturing goods and supplying services in every sector for economic growth and well-being. How come that Africa which is full of these natural resources can be the poorest continent? Africa has steadily engaged in the challenges of the twenty-first century, which began at the beginning of liberalization, which has increased economic integration, even for less developed countries or LDCs to benefit. However, there are questions about the capabilities of countries belonging LDC, especially Africa, which has cast doubt on the continent's economic progress and development. The growing list of number of key considerations and aspects that Africa needs to deal with is seemed to be impossible to know what to start.

There is no term so heavily contested in social science literature/nomenclature than ‘Development’. This book brings Indigenous perspectives to African develop¬ment. It is argued that contrary to development as we know it not working, a greater part of the problem is that conventional development approaches that work have in fact not truly been followed to the letter and hence the quagmire. All this is ironic since everything we do about our world is development. So, how come there is “difficult knowledge” when it comes to learning from what we know, i.e., what local peoples do and have done for centuries as a starting point to recon¬structing and reframing ‘development’? In getting our heads around this paradox, we are tempted to ask more questions. How do we as African scholars and research¬ers begin to develop “home-grown solutions” to our problems? How do we speak of Indigenist development mindful of global developments and entanglements around us? Can we afford to pursue development still mired in a “catch up” scenario? This book is the product of research undertaken at the African Development Bank (AfDB) on the lessons that the continent of Africa can draw from the role of the state in Asia’s rapid economic development in the last 50 years. The book applies a cross-national comparative framework to analyse Africa’s performance drawing broadly on the developmental states of Asia (i.e. Japan, China, India, Vietnam, etc.) with focus on South Korea. The book argues that for Africa to replicate Asia’s developmental success, it may require more than just tweaking the public sector machinery. Dedicated institutions and a citizenry capable of demanding accountability from governments must become key ingredients of the development strategy.
