Their Second Republic

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Building on his successful book, The First Islamist Republic, Abdullahi A. Gallab’s Their Second Republic: Islamism in the Sudan from Disintegration to Oblivion deals with Islamism, its representations, history, and transformations in the region. Continuing the study of Islamism in power the book affirms the continuous disintegration of the Islamist movement in the Sudan taking a critical look at its institutions and their ideological and rhetorical stances. The book provides an entry point into Hasan al-Turabi’s Islamism, its local regimes and their disintegration. The book addresses the profound transformations that stem from the anachronistic qualities of political Islam as it deploys violence to maintain power. Gallab describes this as savage separation of religion and state. The main focus of the book is to provide a socio-historical analysis of developments and transformations of historic forms of Islamism and its “runaway” world as well as situating it in its local and global contexts.

The Liberalisation Of The Islamists In Turkey During 1990 S The Debates Around The Medina Document And Civil Society Project

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Dr. Unal Giindoan The Liberalisation of the Islamists in Turkey During 1990's: The Debates Around the Medina Document and Civil Society Project This book takes snapshots from the venture of the Islamic Movement during second half of the 1990's in Turkey. It was the Civil Society Project, as proposed by Ali Bulac a prominent intellectual, which claimed to establish philosophical basis for a political and social restructuring of Turkey depending upon the basic premises of the Medina Document, which was signed among Muslims, Jews and Pagans of Medina City just after the Prophet Muhammed's migration in 622. The Project was a break from the tradi-tional understanding of Islamic politics both in Turkey and in the Muslim world. It was because of its focus on pluralism, multi-culturalism, democracy, human rights and many other liberal assumptions. This was a turning point in Turkish politics since the discussions created a liberal atmosphere among Islamist, leftist and rightists which at the end resulted in the mass acceptance of Islamic political parties by the voters since midst 1990's. The rise of first Refah Party and then AK Party owe much to this new understanding.

Citizen Islam

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since September 11, Western governments have legitimized and empowered "nonviolent Islamists" as representatives of Islam for all Muslims in the West, an approach that has worried Muslim moderates. Citizen Islam addresses the implications of this approach. The book opens with an overview of the theology and history of Islam, to show that violence and intolerance are not fundamental aspects of the religion. It then explains the growth of Islamism in Europe and in the United States before suggesting that both are finally beginning to recognize the threat posed by nonviolent Islamists. Lastly, it outlines steps that Western and Muslims leaders can take to strengthen moderate Islam and counter the threat of Islamism. Written by Zeyno Baran, a Turkish-born Muslim, Citizen Islam sheds a sharp light on Muslim communities in the West. It concludes that there is much that Western governments can still do to reverse the spread of Islamism. But they must act quickly.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Upheavals in the Middle East: The Theory and Practice of a Revolution engages with some of the most sensitive issues in the Middle East—revolutions and social protests. The book offers theoretical paradigms that suit the Middle East’s conditions—culturally, religiously and historically. It deals with seventeen case studies from a range of Muslim and Arab states and provides a theoretical framework to study other situations all over the world, including cases from the recent Arab Spring. Revolution, as political action, can occur in all societies, but in recent years it has appeared most frequently in the Middle East. Will this trend continue? What makes the Middle Eastern revolution unique and surprising? This book seeks to answer these questions, placing side by side those cases that were successful and those that were doomed to fail.

The author takes us with him into Somalia and Yemen, Eritrea and Djibouti, with excursions into Ethiopia and the Sudan, as he reveals how the economic and environmental crisis currently in gestation could lead to more social dislocation and violence in this strategically important region.

Islamism In The Modern World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Islamism in the Modern World is an accessible, student-oriented introduction to the debates surrounding the historic origins of contemporary Islamism. It explores controversies surrounding contemporary Islamists' indebtedness to various European and Islamic thinkers, as well situating debates concerning the relationship between political Islam, violence and democracy in an historic context. W. J. Berridge explores the continuities, discontinuities, and the impacts of long term social, economic and political change on the nature of Islamism as an ideology. Readers are encouraged to subject the claims of current commentators to the scrutiny of historical analysis, exploring the complexities of the relationship between Islamist and European thinkers – whether classical, Renaissance or modern liberal, fascist or Marxist. The book understands political Islam in the longue durèe, comparing medieval, early modern and modern Islamist thinkers, as well as discussing the compatibility of Islamism – and, indeed, Islam itself – with supposedly 'Western' values such as democracy, feminism, and human rights. Each chapter contains a short bibliography of relevant primary and secondary sources, as well as excerpts from key sources and a glossary of Arabic terms, making this the ideal introduction to the subject for history students.
