"Marvin Cohen's wacky humor," the late Thomas Merton once said, "has something of 'Thurber, something of Steinberg, Buster Keaton, the surrealists, the French pataphysicians." And this in itself is a fair enough assessment, to say the very least, of The Monday Rhetoric of the Love Club, a collection of twenty-one of the prolific Cohen's parables, prose poems, fables, and dialogues. Two of the pieces, including the title story, originally appeared in the New Directions in Prose and Poetry series; most of the others were selected from the many other magazines and anthologies in England and the United States in which Cohen's shorter works have been published.

Souichiro Hino and Itsuki Aoyama finally have a handle on solving the mysteries plaguing Seika Academy. Their Love Club aka "Ghostbusters" has members with all kinds of skills to use against the spirits and demons that try to make their home at the school. But then Souichiro begins having strange dreams about a young girl who keeps trying to warn him of impending doom. The next thing he knows, Souichiro is being transferred to a new Academy where there is another Love Club that needs his and Itsuki's help. And what does this sudden transfer have to do with the Dragon Blade once owned by his father? All this plus volcanoes, earthquakes and elder demons no one should awaken...

Souichiro Hino and Itsuki Aoyama and their Love Club, aka 'Ghostbusters,' think their biggest problems are solving and defeating The Seven Mysteries of Seika Academy. Souichiro sure thinks that enough for them to worry about. However, there seems to be more than seven mysteries. Not even Itsuki knows how many there may actually be, or when they might pop up and suck them into another dimension. On top of all that, there are the mysteries that come to visit on their own. First, there is the new school doctor who turns out to be a flesh eating demon with family problems. And then, there is the ghost of a little girl chasing the ghost of a little kitten. Somehow, they are connected to the teacher that's gone berserk and keeps chasing Love Club members with a broom. As Souichiro is in a near constant battle for his life and dodging the affections of all the wrong guys, he often wonders why his mother, world famous psychic, Souko Hino, thought this school was a good idea!

Life for Souichiro Hino and Itsuki Aoyama and their Love Club aka Ghostbusters should be getting easier. The club finally have a teacher adviser who won't run screaming into the night. They've even managed to attract girls who aren't spirits to their ranks. However, fate and Souko Hino, Souichiro's mother, have other plans. Souko chooses not to warn them when they take on a video game that is a portal to hell. She even farms them out to sold a haunting of a historic mansion. Meanwhile, those portals at Seika Academy keep popping up ready to suck unsuspecting students inside to be eaten by demons. And then, there is the talking mouse with magical powers! Will the adventures ever end so they can have a normal school day?

Three high-school students whose parents have all died or disappeared for one reason or another are stranded without a moral code to live by and band together to create "The Unrequited Love Club," a group whose sole purpose is to be a defense mechanism against society and exact retribution upon their community. The girlsa "Wenda, Bonnie, and Vanessaa "host a series of dramatic plays to entice unsuspecting freshmen to do their bidding. The Club is tormented by malicious authority figures, including a villainous psychiatrist, who wants to seize the estate bequeathed to Wenda by her father."

Souichiro Hino's mother may be a world famous psychic, but she sure has trouble keeping track of everyday details. For example, that 'wonderful' new school she sent him to was embroiled in a string of grisly murders. All of the victims were male students like Souichiro. Nor did she mention that fellow psychic and childhood friend, Itsuki Aoyama, attended the school and was expecting him to do something about all of that. And then there was Itsuki's Love Club, also known as the Ghostbusters. Somehow, his friend had gotten it into his head that a random group of kids – and one friendly spirit of a dead honor student – could take on and defeat The Seven Mysteries of Seika Academy, which actually numbered ten or more. Souichiro didn't have time to object. There was a killer Sakura tree in the garden and a portal to hell in the Emergency Stairwell. If all of this wasn't bad enough, there was that 'connection' between him and Itsuki. They hadn't seen each other for years, yet everyone treated them like a couple! Souko Hino sure had a lot of explaining to do!
