If the truth be known, I am only a partially reformed idealist. In the secret depths of my soul, I still wish to make the world a better place and sometimes fantasize about heroically eradicating its faults. When I encounter its limitations, it is consequently with deep regret and continued surprise. How, I ask myself, is it possible that that which seems so fight can be a chimera? And why, I wonder, aren't people as courageous, smart, or nice as I would like? The pain of realizing these things is sometimes so intense that I want to close my eyes and lose myself in the kinds of daydreams that comforted me as a youngster. One thing is clear, my need to come to grips with my idealism had its origin in a lifetime of naivet6. From the beginning, I wanted to be a "good" person. Often when life was most treacherous, I retreated into a comer from whence I escaped into reveries of moral glory. When I was very young, my faith was in religion. In Hebrew school, I took my lessons seriously and tried to apply them at home. By my teen years, this had been replaced by an allegiance to socialism. In the Brooklyn where I grew up, my teachers and relatives made this seem the natural course. When I reached my twenties, however, and was obliged to confront a series of personal deficiencies, psychotherapy shouldered its way to the fore.

In July 2006, teachers of writing came together to share their knowledge, experience and creative expression in language arts as participants in the Meadow Brook Writing Project at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Affiliated with the National Writing Project, the Meadow Brook Writing Project's 2006 Summer Institute provided these teachers with the opportunity to learn from each other and write together during a month of intensive professional development. In the Company of Writers 2006 is the wonderful anthology resulting from their collaboration. All participants, from elementary through college, returned to their classrooms in the fall, inspired and ready to pass on that inspiration to their students in order to help them become better writers.

The world is suffering from a severe drought. After no rain anywhere on earth for more than six months, the forests and oil fields are burning. The nations blame each other for global warming, some call it Freak Weather Syndrome, others God's revenge. In the UK, the Conservative, David Geayton is made Minister of Drought while his daughter, Lucy, tries to survive the increasing horrors of the Philippines. In Moscow, Liudmila is part of an environmental organisation that is planning a 'Save the Planet' conference and Charlotte Brand is reporting the corruption of the governors in San Francisco and the Government of America. No one knows they are suffering the effects of a divine unrequited love until a long forgotten pantheon of gods are made to come to earth to hold an election. But who, if anyone, will believe them? A Divine War is a humorous and irreverent tale - with serious consequences.

Anthony Burgess combined high artistic seriousness with very broad popular appeal. The writer of A Clockwork Orange and Napoleon Symphony variously cast himself in the roles of uncompromising artist and willing entertainer. What links these contradictory aspirations is Burgess' ambivalent relationship with James Joyce. In his daring experimentation with the novel form, Burgess always had the Joycean example to emulate, but he also invoked the great precursor to vindicate the rawer components of his art. The author is not blinded by his comparative agenda to Burgess' debts incurred elsewhere. Burgess' work reverberates with echoes of lesser masters as well as securely canonized classics: his voices include the Maughamesque and the Shakespearean as they do the Eliotian and, of course, the Joycean. Anthony Burgess is thus reintroduced as a (post)modern classic himself: Jake's deserving peer and Will's true son.
