The goal of this redaction-critical investigation is to determine what in Luke 22 is special to Luke, to assess its origin, and to uncover Luke's purpose in using this material. Unlike earlier studies, Soards concentrates on lines of thought that link the chapter with the Gospel as a whole. The author's conclusion is that though Luke did not use a single coherent source other than Mark for this chapter, his diverse material was chosen in order to advance Luke's distinctive interests in Christology, eschatology and ecclesiology. Christologically, Jesus is shown as in charge of the Passion events and as the realization of a divine plan; eschatologically, the Passion is portrayed as inaugurating the era of the Last Days; ecclesiologically, Jesus's attitude to his disciples functions as instruction for Luke's readers about their role in God's plan.

This highly original commentary, part of the New International Commentary, is unique for the way it combines concerns with first-century culture in the Roman world with understanding the text of Luke as a wholistic, historical narrative.

Jerome Neyrey brings a remarkably enlightened approach to the Passion Narrative, and to Luke's particular version of it. The book begins where previous studies leave off, for it goes beyond traditional questions of source and historicity and treats the Lukan Passion Narrative from the standpoint of redaction criticism. Neyrey offers a fresh literary analysis of the text, along with significant thematic and theological insights into Luke's version of Jesus's Passion. Five major episodes in the Passion Narrative are treated: The Farewell Address at the Last Supper, the Garden, Jesus's Trials, his Address to the Women, and the Crucifixion. Although rich in detail, this book continually offers a unified view of the text; readers are constantly offered overviews, summaries of the data, and interpretation of it. The book breaks new ground in suggesting a distinctive Lukan soteriology of the cross and a corresponding Christology. Study of the faith of the dying Jesus becomes a major clue for seeing Jesus as the New Adam in Luke-Acts. This book significantly advances our reading of Luke, especially by the way Acts is brought to bear as an interpretive clue to Luke's whole project, Luke-Acts. Contemporary interpretation of Luke demands study of the way Lukan structures and themes are continued and confirmed in Acts, which holds true especially for the Passion Narrative. Luke brings the story of Jesus into harmony with the story of his church.

The nature of Lukan christology has been much debated in recent years, with scholars claiming the pre-eminence of such categories as Lord, Prophet, Christ, or Isaianic Servant. In the present work the author examines one major theme within Luke's christology, that of the coming king from the line of David. A study of the Lukan birth narrative and the speeches in Acts reveals that Luke shows a strong interest in this royal-messianic theme, introducing it into passages which are introductory and programmatic for his christology as a sermon, portraying Jesus in strongly prophetic terms. The author seeks a synthesis of these seemingly conflicting royal and prophetic portraits in Luke's interpretation of the Old Testament book of Isaiah. When Isaiah is read as a unity, the eschatological deliverer is at the same time Davidic king (Isa. 9.11), suffering servant of Yahweh (Isa. 42-53), and prophet herald of salvation (Isa. 61), leading God's people on an eschatological new exodus. On the basis of this synthesis the christology of Luke-Acts is seen to be both consistent and unified, forming an integral part of Luke's wider purpose in his two-volume work.

This series of commentaries on the New English Bible is designed for use in schools and colleges, and for the minister and the layman. Each volume comments on one book, or a few short books, of the Bible, and in each the text is given in full. Sections of text and commentary alternate, so that the reader does not have to keep two books open, or turn from one part of the book to the other, or refer to a commentary in small type at the foot of the page. Great care has been taken to see that the commentary is suitable for the student and the layman: there is no Greek or Hebrew, and no strings of biblical references, but the commentary does convey the latest and best scholarship. Hyun Ho Park employs social identity to create the first thorough analysis via such methodology of Acts 21:17-23:35, which contains one of the fiercest intergroup conflicts in Acts. Park's assessment allows his readers to rethink, reevaluate, and reimagine Jewish-Christian relations; teaches them how to respond to the vicious cycle of slander, labeling, and violence permeating contemporary public and private spheres; and presents a new hermeneutical cycle and describes how readers may apply it to their own sociopolitical contexts. After surveying previous studies of the text, Park first analyses Paul's welcome, questioning, and arrest, and how slandering and labeling make Paul an outsider. Park then describes how, through defending his Jewish identity and the Way, Paul nuances his public image and re-categorizes himself and the Way as part of the people of God. When Paul identifies himself as a Roman and later a Pharisee, Park examines Luke's ambivalent attitude toward Rome and the Pharisees, and assesses how Paul escapes dangerous situations by claiming different social identities at different times. Finally, he discloses the vicious cycle of slander, labeling, and violence not only against the Way but also against the Jews and challenges the discursive process of identity construction through intergroup conflict with an out-group, especially the proximate “Other.” Furthermore, he demonstrates how the relevance of such scholarship is not limited to Lukan studies or even biblical studies in general; the frequent use of slander, labeling, and violence in the politics of the United States and other polarized countries around the globe demands new ways of looking at intergroup relations, and Park's argument meets the needs of those seeking a new perspective on contemporary political discord.

This volume offers a collection of Lukan studies by Adelbert Denaux, whose preferred field of studies has been the Gospel of Luke for many years. The thirteen papers collected in this volume have been delivered in different languages and on different occasions. The papers deal with several aspects of Luke's Gospel: structure, Old Testament influence, theology and christology, Luke and Q, language and style, and individual passages. Adelbert Denaux (1938), Professor emeritus New Testament at the K.U. Leuven, is actually Dean of the Tilburg School of Theology, the Netherlands (2007- ).
