BOOK EXCERPT:
With the extraordinary growth of Christianity in the global south has come the rise of "reverse missions," in which countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America send missionaries to re-evangelize the West. In The Spirit Moves West, Rebecca Kim uses South Korea as a case study of how non-Western missionaries target Americans, particularly white Americans. She draws on four years of interviews, participant observation, and surveys of South Korea's largest non-denominational missionary-sending agency, University Bible Fellowship, in order to provide an inside look at this growing phenomenon. Known as the "Asian Protestant Superpower," South Korea is second only to the United States in the number of missionaries it sends abroad: approximately 22,000 in over 160 countries. Conducting her research both in the US and in South Korea, Kim studies the motivations and methods of these Korean evangelicals who have, since the 1970s, sought to "bring the gospel back" to America. By offering the first empirically-grounded examination of this much-discussed phenomenon, Kim explores what non-Western missions will mean to the future of Christianity in America and around the world.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In 1974 nearly 3,000 evangelicals from 150 nations met at the Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization. Amidst this cosmopolitan setting - and in front of the most important white evangelical leaders of the United States - members of the Latin American Theological Fraternity spoke out against the American Church. Fiery speeches by Ecuadorian René Padilla and Peruvian Samuel Escobar revealed a global weariness with what they described as an American style of coldly efficient mission wedded to myopic, right-leaning politics. Their bold critiques electrified Christians from around the world. The dramatic growth of Christianity around the world in the last century has shifted the balance of power within the faith away from the traditional strongholds of Europe and the United States to the Global South. To be sure, Western missionaries have carried religion abroad, but the line of influence has often run the other way. David R. Swartz demonstrates that evangelicals in the Global South spoke frankly to American evangelicals on matters of race, imperialism, theology, sexuality, and social justice. From the left, they have pushed for racial egalitarianism, ecumenism, and more substantial development efforts. From the right, they have advocated for a conservative sexual ethic. They forced American Christians to think more critically about their own assumptions. The United States is just one node of a sprawling global network that includes Korea, India, Switzerland, the Philippines, Guatemala, Uganda, and Thailand. Telling stories of the diverse array of evangelicals around the world, Swartz shows that evangelical networks don't only extend outward, but back home from the ends of the earth.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Wm. Carr Lane was a man of great courage and intelligence who combined action, vision, and leadership to solve problems during the decades leading up to the Civil War. Elected to mayor of St. Louis in 1823 at just thirty-four, Lane was greatly involved in the expansion of the United States as his brawling frontier town grew into a city trapped in struggles over slavery. There is no question he was a fascinating and important man who lived through a period of major and rapid change in America. William C. Carson, great-great grandson of Wm. Carr Lane, has written an intriguing biography inspired by letters Lane wrote his wife of forty-five years and the journal he kept while traveling over the Santa Fe Trail and in New Mexico. After beginning with an early history of Lanes life, Carson details his public persona as he was elected to eight terms as mayor of St. Louis, appointed to another, served in the state legislature, worked as quartermaster general of Missouri, ran for Congress, practiced medicine, traded real estate, started businesses, and raised a family. When he died in St. Louis in 1863, Lane was known as a tireless leader who played a critical role during a tumultuous time in American history. He Moved West with America shares a captivating history of a political leader who, in his own passionate way, made a great impact on the United States during the pre-Civil War era.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In recent decades there has been a seismic shift in world Christianity. Whereas formerly Christianity existed as a Caucasian Euro-American phenomenon, the majority of Christians today reside in the Southern Hemisphere, or the Global South. And what is true for the demographics of Christianity has followed lockstep for its theological developments. The era of German theologians setting the tone for global church are gone. Today, some of the loudest and most creative voices in theology speak from the emerging contingencies of the Global South, for example, promoting Latinx, Black, Caribbean, and Asian theologies and their influence often influences the conversation in the United States and Europe. In addition, just as the center of Christianity has moved geographically from north to south, so with theological seminaries in the west, which have declined as training centers for clergy. These events coincide with new theological centers are opening in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Latin America. The bottom line is--contemporary Christianity today looks significantly different than it did a century ago, and publications have been slow to acknowledge, let alone describe and elaborate upon, this major shift to the largest religion in the world. These shifts guide our intentions in this book. Such a reference book, which could also be used as a textbook, therefore is very much needed. In fact, there is nothing like the contents of this single-volume book in the publishing market which allows for high-quality, interdisciplinary, and international dialogue.
