The second installment in 'The People's Trilogy', the groundbreaking series from Samuel Johnson Prize-winning author Frank Dikötter 'For anyone who wants to understand the current Beijing regime, this is essential background reading' Anne Applebaum 'Essential reading for all who want to understand the darkness that lies at the heart of one of the world's most important revolutions' Guardian 'Dikötter performs here a tremendous service by making legible the hugely controversial origins of the present Chinese political order' Timothy Snyder In 1949 Mao Zedong hoisted the red flag over Beijing's Forbidden City. Instead of liberating the country, the communists destroyed the old order and replaced it with a repressive system that would dominate every aspect of Chinese life. In an epic of revolution and violence which draws on newly opened party archives, interviews and memoirs, Frank Dikötter interweaves the stories of millions of ordinary people with the brutal politics of Mao's court. BOOK EXCERPT:
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 1948, the communists laid siege to Changchun, a city in the middle of the Manchurian plain north of the Great Wall of China. They starved the city into surrender, and turned it into a city of death. #2 The city of Changchun, China, was besieged by communist troops in 1948. The anti-aircraft artillery of the communists forced the nationalists to fly at an altitude of 3,000 meters. The airdrops landed outside the area controlled by the nationalists. #3 The situation inside the city was little better than outside it. Besides the airdrops for the garrison, some 330 tonnes of grain were required daily to feed the civilians, but at best 84 tonnes were delivered by four or five planes. Everything was requisitioned in the defense of Changchun. #4 The fall of Changchun was hailed in China’s history books as a decisive victory in the battle of Manchuria, but it came at a huge cost, as an estimated 160,000 civilians were starved to death inside the area besieged by the communists.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Routledge Handbook of Revolutionary China covers the evolution of Chinese society from the roots of the Republic of China in the early 1900s until the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976. The chapters in this volume explain aspects of the process of revolution and how people adapted to the demands of the revolutionary situation. Exploring changes in political leadership, as well as transformation in culture, it compares the differences in experiences in urban and rural areas and contrasts rapid changes, such as the war with Japan and Communist ‘liberation’ with evolutionary developments, such as the gradual redefinition of public space. Taking a comprehensive approach, the themes covered include: • War, occupation and liberation • Religion and gender • Education, cities and travel. This is an essential resource for students and scholars of Modern China, Republican China, Revolutionary China and Chinese Politics.
