Transnational Ukraine

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Euromaidan protests showed Ukraine to be a state between East and West European paths. Ukraine’s search for an identity and future is deeply rooted in historical fractures, which indicate its longstanding ties beyond its borders. In this volume, distinguished scholars provide empirical analysis and theoretical reflections on Ukraine’s transnational embeddedness, which surfaced with an unexpected intensity in the recent political conflict. The essays have subjects including the role of international media and of diaspora communities in Euromaidan’s aftermath, the transnational roots of memory and the search for collective identity, and transnational linkages of elites within Ukrainian political and economic regimes. The anthology demonstrates the theoretical and analytical value of the concept of transnationalism for studying the ambivalent processes of post-Soviet modernization.

Ukrainian Migration To The European Union

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book brings together research findings from a variety of disciplines in this integrated study of the migration of Ukrainian nationals to the EU. It contextualizes and historicizes this migration against the background of the series of crises experienced by Ukraine and the wider region over the last thirty or so years, from the dissolution of the USSR, through EU border changes, to the failed economic reforms of independent Ukraine. The book reviews major publications in a variety of disciplines and in several languages, including Russian, Ukrainian and English. It provides a critical analysis of these authoritative sources, linking historical and contemporary texts to establish a longitudinal perspective on migration trends and practices. The spatial, temporal, gender and geopolitical aspects of migration are examined, with expert analysis of the implications for economics, immigration policies, and migration studies. The contributors also draw on national and international academic research and country-specific data to describe the experience of Ukrainian migration in six European countries: Poland, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. These detailed portraits identify the principal trends and will help researchers, policy makers, and students to a better understanding of the dynamics of migration flow in the region as a whole. “A timely volume covering many cases and many facets of Ukrainian mobility in the EU. A must have for all libraries.” Anna Triandafyllidou, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) "Is Ukraine the Mexico of Europe, I once asked. It is one of the most eminent migration cases to study. This book fills an acute knowledge gap and is a rich and important contribution." Franck Düvell, University of Oxford “This collection offers a comprehensive historical and geographical analysis of various migratory patterns from Ukraine to different European countries. It is a must read for migration scholars and for anyone interested in this highly topical phenomenon.” Lena Näre, University of Helsinki

Democratic Consolidation In Eastern Europe Volume 2 International And Transnational Factors

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the second volume in a two-volume series of books on democratic consolidation in Eastern Europe. The first volume focused on the issue of institutional engineering. This second volume analyses the external parameters of democratic consolidation in thirteen Eastern European countries: how different international actors and various economic, cultural and security types of transnational pressures have shaped democratic politics in the region. The aim is to contrast a set of democracy theories with empirical evidence accumulated in Eastern Europe over the last ten years. The volume tries to avoid complex debates about definitions, methods and the uses and misuses of comparative research. Instead it seeks to establish what has really happened in the region, and which of the existing theories are helpful in explaining these developments. The volume is divided into two parts. The first part presents a conceptual and comparative frame of analysis, the second consists of detailed studies of individual countries undergoing democratic consolidation. Case study chapters deal with the following countries: Estonia and Latvia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Macedonia, the states of former Yugoslavia, Belarus and Ukraine, and finally Russia. The concluding chapter identifies a set of variables responsible for the enormous impact of external factors on democratic consolidation in Eastern Europe. It conceptualises the interplay of internal and external factors impinging upon democracy, and shows the interplay of different positive and negative types of external pressures. It also evaluates the conscious Western effort to craft or engineer democracy in Eastern Europe.

Peripheries At The Centre

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Following the Treaty of Versailles, European nation-states were faced with the challenge of instilling national loyalty in their new borderlands, in which fellow citizens often differed dramatically from one another along religious, linguistic, cultural, or ethnic lines. Peripheries at the Centre compares the experiences of schooling in Upper Silesia in Poland and Eupen, Sankt Vith, and Malmedy in Belgium — border regions detached from the German Empire after the First World War. It demonstrates how newly configured countries envisioned borderland schools and language learning as tools for realizing the imagined peaceful Europe that underscored the political geography of the interwar period.

Law And Practice Of International Arbitration In The Cis Region

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The former Soviet republics of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) generate a significant and growing amount of work for the major Western and CIS regional international arbitral institutions. This book, a country-by-country analysis of regulation and practice of international arbitration in ten CIS jurisdictions, offers the first comprehensive review of commercial arbitration in the region. It also analyses notable developments in the use of arbitration mechanisms contained in bilateral and multilateral investment treaties affecting the region. The book provides not only a detailed analysis of the law, but also insight from local practitioners into the culture of arbitration and how the law is applied in each jurisdiction. Jurisdictions covered include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. In addition to detailed discussion of the particular features of arbitral practice in each jurisdiction, contributions cover the following issues and topics: • arbitrability of disputes and public policy; • arbitral procedure; • recognition and enforcement of commercial and investor-state arbitration awards; • implementation of the UNCITRAL Model Law and other instruments affecting arbitral practice and procedure; • statistics from key arbitration institutions; • adherence to the ICSID, New York and key regional conventions relevant to arbitration; • relevant regulations, cases as well as applicable bilateral investment treaties; • law and practice related to investor-state arbitration; and • role of the Court of the Eurasian Economic Union. An informative introductory chapter provides detailed discussion and analysis of historic and current trends affecting arbitration practice among the CIS countries, including the role of regional conventions relatively unknown in the West. As a comprehensive overview of international arbitration in this burgeoning region, this book has no peers. It is sure to be highly valued and used by lawyers, arbitrators, and academics concerned with alternative dispute resolution, as well as by arbitration institutions, companies, states, and individuals engaged in arbitration.
