"Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland" is a novel by Olive Schreiner, a South African author, pacifist, and political activist, who advocated for the rights of the colonized nations. In this novel, she tells the story of Peter, a white man, who gets lost in the African bush, joins an army battalion, and has to execute a native, which presupposes a tough moral choice for him.

By tracing the rise of the New Man alongside novelistic changes in the representations of marriage, MacDonald shows how this figure encouraged Victorian writers to reassess masculine behaviour and to re-imagine the marriage plot in light of wider social changes. She finds examples in novels by Dickens, Anne Brontë, George Eliot and George Gissing.
