Scripture reveals that God has various attributes. One of the attributes that Scripture frequently refers to is God’s righteousness. The attribute of God’s righteousness enjoys a lot of scholarly attention in systematic theologies. Fewer studies, however, are devoted to investigating God’s righteousness from a Biblical Theological perspective. This is exactly what this publication does: it provides a number of Biblical Theological investigations into the attribute of God’s righteousness by investigating specific verses, chapters, and corpora from Scripture, and indicates how these portray God’s righteousness as part of the developing, unfolding, and progressive storyline of the text. This includes research on topics that have not been adequately explored in the past. The Letter to the Romans explains the way Paul thought Jewish covenantal identity continued now that the messianic era had begun. More particularly, Paul addresses the relevance of Abraham for Jews and gentiles, the role of Torah, and the way it is contextualized in Christ. All too often, however, these topics are read in supersessionist ways. This book argues that such readings are unpersuasive. It offers instead a post-supersessionist perspective in which Jewish covenantal identity continues in Paul’s gospel. Paul is no destroyer of worlds. The aim of this book is to offer a different view of the key interpretive points that lead to supersessionist understandings of Paul’s most important letter. It draws on the findings of those aligned with the Paul within Judaism paradigm and accents those findings with a light touch from social identity theory. When combined, these resources help the reader to hear Romans afresh, in a way that allows both Jewish and non-Jewish existing identities continued relevance.

Though much-studied, Pauline soteriology can be seen afresh by giving focused attention to the apostle's language and conception of sin. Sometimes Paul appears to present sin and disobedience as transgression, while at other times sin is personified as an enslaving power. Is there a single model or perspective that can account for Paul's conceptual range in his discussion of sin? What does careful study of Paul's letters reveal about the christological and pneumatological remedies to the problem of sin as he conceives of them? These questions are explored in the context of individual Pauline letters, building a richer understanding of the apostle's attitude to sin and its remedy.

Strange how one little word, the Greek word pistis, can make a profound difference in understanding the Bible. Pistis is usually translated “faith,” but in different contexts of the New Testament the word can have several other meanings such as “faithfulness,” “trustworthiness,” “solemn promise or oath,” “proof or pledge,” “conviction,” and “doctrine (of the Christian faith).” This book will challenge the reader’s understanding of Paul’s expression pistis Christou, “faith/faithfulness of Christ,” and the use of the pistis word group (verb, noun, and adjective) throughout the New Testament. Given the Old Testament background to this word, one will learn how the apostle Paul utilized an obscure phrase from the prophet Habakkuk to refer to a coming Messiah who in turn lived in faithfulness to the Father’s will to die on a cross for the sins of the world. This book will reveal how the gospel is emphasized throughout the New Testament in terms of “the faithfulness of Jesus the Messiah.” New and fresh interpretations of various texts will challenge the traditional understandings of such texts. When a person comprehends pistis as God’s faithfulness and the Messiah’s faithfulness, the only human response is pistis itself, meaning faithfulness as described in Hebrews 11. God is faithful and Jesus is faithful. Will he find us faithful?

Hardening hearts. Blinding eyes. Sending deceitful spirits. Crafting vessels of wrath. Few will deny that certain biblical passages make claims about God that are difficult to accept. But perhaps the most troubling are the verses that describe God as influencing individuals or groups towards wicked behavior for the purpose of condemning them. How to make sense of the ideas of fullness of life and justice for all, in light of the many crises humanity currently faces but also the glimpses of positive and hopeful responses? Even more so, how to make sense theologically? In this volume twenty authors reflect on how the notions of fullness of life and justice for all are theoretically conceived and have practically taken form from within Dominican theology and spirituality. The contributions on youth spirituality, contemplation, art as a means to community building, gender, pluralization, populism and management discuss the fullness of life in both its material and spiritual dimensions.
