BOOK EXCERPT:

Leadership lessons from the trenches There is no shortage of consultants, coaches, gurus, and authors who regurgitate lists of leadership principles. The deficit lies in the number of qualified leaders willing to share the truth about what it takes to lead a great team year after year. Fortunately, military veteran John Berry is one of those qualified leaders. Drawing from his experience as an army platoon leader and the CEO of Berry Law, John Berry shows mission-focused teams how simple military leadership lessons apply to any organization. He covers, among many other topics: • Managing threats, opportunities, and constraints in business • How to locate, secure, and develop high-performing team members • Why a sense of urgency is critical in client relations and hiring • How efficiency starts with resourcefulness • Why you can’t execute the complex without first mastering the simple • How to maintain a company battle rhythm • What is the leader’s responsibility and what is not Veteran Led is an invaluable guide for any leader who strives to emulate the U.S. military’s preparedness, resilience, and camaraderie in their teams. Its insights can help organizations in any field not only survive but thrive and dominate.

Psychotherapy Of The Combat Veteran

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

AN OVERVIEW OF THE PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH TO THE WAR NEUROSES The survivors of traumatic events have long been known to suffer psychological sequelae. Of all possible stressors, combat is one of the most devastating. Wartime exposes its victim to a myriad of stimuli that are far beyond those of civilized life. The impact that remains can affect generations to come. In recent years there has been a paucity of research on the long term effects of battle. Particularly after the recent war there was initially an inclination to minimize the psychological impact of combat. It was only after concerted effort by a few dedicated clini cians that formal recognition was granted to the current version of the war neuroses. In the parlance of the day it was called the Post traumatic Stress Disorder (Figley, 1978). This phenomenologic diagnosis has been instrumental in bringing the necessary attention to this condition. Its applicability has been tested across a wide range of stressors, from man-made to natural. Few workers in the field now doubt the power of traumatic events to leave a profound impression on the victim. Contrary to previous thought, it has now been found that this imprint often becomes a chronic scar. Copyright © 1984 by Spectrum Publications, Inc. Veteran Mps And Conservative Politics In The Aftermath Of The Great War

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Between 1918 and 1939, 448 men who performed uniformed service in the First World War became Conservative MPs. This relatively high-profile cohort have been under-explored as a distinct body, yet a study of their experiences of the war and the ways in which they - and the Conservative Party - represented those experiences to the voting public reveals much about the political culture of Interwar Britain and the use of the Great War as political capital. Radicalised ex-servicemen have, thus far, been considered a rather continental phenomenon historiographically. And whilst attitudes to Hitler and Mussolini form part of this analysis, the study also explores why there were fewer such types in Britain. The Conservative Party, it will be shown, played a crucial part in such a process - with British politics serving as a contested space for survivors' interpretations of what the war should mean.

Veteran And Military Mental Health

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book addresses mental health treatment for veterans and active military personnel. In addition to examining foundational practices in the sub-field, it contains specifically tailored content concerning the recent collapse of the United States (US) installed Afghanistan government. The book is conscious of the myriad of complex emotions that veterans who fought for the past twenty years may be experiencing. Organized into four parts, the book begins with the foundations of veteran and military mental health culture as patients transition from active duty to veteran status, understand the present stigma and barriers to care and reflect on their deployment experience. Part two delves into the specifics of the healthcare system in which military personnel find themselves at various points in their career, including deployment and returning home. Following this, chapters examine the critically unique conditions found in patients, such as sleep disorders, traumatic brain injury, homelessness, substance abuse, and sexual trauma. The book closes with discussions on veterans and their families that focus on the effects of deployment on a military person’s loved ones and their mental state upon returning home. Timely, socially conscious, and comprehensive, the Clinical Manual on Veteran and Military Mental Health is an invaluable resource for mental health professionals receiving new military personnel patients and who have seen a significant shift in their patients due to recent events.

Diversifying Greek Tragedy On The Contemporary Us Stage

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In its long history of performance and reception, Greek drama has been interpreted and adapted in countless ways and forms in response to and as a reflection of the preoccupations and tensions of particular historical moments. This volume continues this tradition by investigating a cross-section of theatrical productions on the contemporary American stage that have reimagined Greek tragedy in order to address the political and social concerns of minority communities. Studying performance and its role in creating and reflecting social, cultural, and historical identity in contemporary America, it draws on cutting-edge research in the field to move discussion away from the interpretation of dramatic texts in isolation from their performance context, and towards an analysis of the dynamic experience of live theatre. The discussion focuses particularly on the ability of engaged performances to pose critical challenges to the long-standing stereotypes that have contributed to the misrepresentation and marginalization of minority cultures. However, in the process it also uncovers the ways in which such performances can inadvertently reinforce the very stereotypes they aim to execute, demonstrating that ancient drama can be a powerful and dangerous tool in the search for social justice.

Military Veteran Employment

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"Setting the historical context for this book, this chapter describes the recent history of civilian veteran employment, relaying how the high military veteran unemployment rate in 2010 generated concern and reactions from the government and the public and the private sectors. It then provides examples of how government and companies worked together to improve the employment situation of military veterans through legislation, corporate hiring programs, and corporate partnerships but faced limited success because too few companies were involved. The current situation of veteran employment and retention is outlined, with examples provided of why military veterans may choose to leave civilian employment and suggestions offered to address the issues veteran employees may have in their jobs so that employers can do a better job of retaining them in their workforces"--
