"Voyage In Search Of La Perouse" or "Relation du Voyage à la Recherche de la Pérouse" is an 1800-account of the 1791-1793 expedition to Australasia. The expedition was sent in search of La Pérouse, a French naval officer and explorer who disappeared in the region in 1788. Although unsuccessful in reaching its aim, the expedition resulted in numerous discoveries, published in the two volumes. The author, Jacques Labillardière, a French botanist on the voyage, collected and described the continent's flora. The work contains some of the earliest descriptions of Australian flora and fauna and an account of the indigenous peoples of Tasmania.

This 1800 English translation, covering a scientifically significant voyage in Australasia, is accompanied by a volume of finely engraved plates.

Following the mysterious disappearance of the La Pérouse expedition after it sailed out of Botany Bay in 1788, the French botanist Jacques-Julien Houtou de Labillardière (1755-1834) took part in the search that departed in 1791 from Brest in two ships, Recherche and Espérance. In the space of three years, the expedition's naturalists collected numerous specimens, with Labillardière focusing on Australian flora, but their missing countrymen were never found. Notwithstanding the later confiscation of the scientific collections by the British - Sir Joseph Banks helped to secure their return - Labillardière was able to publish this narrative to great acclaim in 1800. Reissued here is the English translation of the same year, complete with a volume of finely engraved plates. The work is especially notable for its descriptions and illustrations of the indigenous peoples of Australasia. This topical and conceptually innovative book proposes new perspectives on the theme of materiality which, since the 1980s, has animated work across and within disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The particular focus of the chapters in this volume is the materiality of knowledge produced through embodied encounters between people, places, and things in the Pacific Islands, New Guinea, Australia, and Myanmar.
