This title, originally published in 1982, examines the importance of western irrigation to U.S. agriculture and the impacts of the changing water supply situation on the development of western irrigation. Past trends, water supply conditions, water institutions, economic forces, technological alternatives, and environmental factors are examined for their impacts on the course of western irrigation. Technology in American Water Development is an exploratory study. This book addresses the proven technology which has influenced water development in the past, those still effective in shaping its course and the emerging technology of today. The heart of this study is in the thirty-one case descriptions selected from both the emerging and proven technology. Each case description has been treated as briefly as is consistent with clarity, and nontechnical language has been used wherever possible. This title will help to introduce engineers and physical scientists to the administrative problems and opportunities which stem from their works.

Conflicts among water users still occur in the American West. Environmentalists, who want water to be left in the rivers to preserve threatened species, compete with urban & agricultural users for the West's limited water resources. This study analyzes the policy tools slated for use in California, estimates the costs of those reforms to agriculture in the state, & discusses the implications of using those policy tools in the rest of the West.
