BOOK EXCERPT:
The selection of papers in this special issue of WEMS illustrates the various aspects of water and wastewater treatment and management. These papers were presented at the 2nd Young Researchers Conference held on 23-24 April 2004, at the University of Wageningen, The Netherlands. It was organised on behalf of the International Water Association (IWA) and supported by the European Symposium of Environmental Biotechnology (ESEB 2000). The IWA Young Researcher Conferences' mission is to provide young researchers in water and wastewater science, technology and management with a forum to discuss current and future environmental concerns. The conferences aim to confront environmental researchers with technologists and regulatory instances dealing with environmental quality. Moreover, the IWA Young Researchers Conferences address issues related to the development of careers in the water sector.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book represents a major contribution to the development and increasingly accepted importance of involving service users in research. It argues that this development is neither a fad nor a cure-all, and highlights the strengths, weaknesses, benefits and costs of the approach. It is the first text to analyze the involvement of service users from the conception of a research idea to the finish of the project. The author critically considers why service users even bother getting involved, and goes on to explore ethical issues, covering key topics such as: - the practice of service-user research; research conception, recruitment, training, development of research tools, data collection, analysis, writing up, dissemination and endings - barriers to involvement and the limitations of service-user research, with practical advice on how these can be addressed - both sameness and difference in relation to involving young people in research - alternative futures for involving service users in research. Using reflexive questions and practical examples to challenge the reader to consider his/her own position in relation to these issues, this book should occupy a central place on the shelves of all undergraduate health and social welfare students. It is also crucial reading for those studying postgraduate professional qualifications and research methods, and for practitioner researchers and policy staff considering the best ways of undertaking meaningful service user involvement.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A significant part of the 2004 Summer Research Conference on Algebraic Geometry (Snowbird, UT) was devoted to lectures introducing the participants, in particular, graduate students and recent Ph.D.'s, to a wide swathe of algebraic geometry and giving them a working familiarity with exciting, rapidly developing parts of the field. One of the main goals of the organizers was to allow the participants to broaden their horizons beyond the narrow area in which they are working. A fine selection of topics and a noteworthy list of contributors made the resulting collection of articles a useful resource for everyone interested in getting acquainted with the modern topic of algebraic geometry. The book consists of ten articles covering, among others, the following topics: the minimal model program, derived categories of sheaves on algebraic varieties, Kobayashi hyperbolicity, groupoids and quotients in algebraic geometry, rigid analytic varieties, and equivariant cohomology. Suitable for independent study, this unique volume is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in algebraic geometry.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is the first its kind to offer an innovative examination of the intersecting influences, contexts, and challenges within the field of children’s dark tourism. It also outlines novel conceptualizations and methods for scholarship in this overlooked field. Presently, tourism research, and in dark tourism specifically, relies primarily on adult-centered theories and data collection methods. However, these approaches are inadequate for understanding and developing children’s experiences and perspectives. This book seeks to inform and inspire research on children’s experiences of dark tourism. Designed to appeal to students and scholars, it brings together insights from leading experts. The book focuses on five themes, to explore the conceptual and historic origins of children’s dark tourism, developmental contexts, child perspectives, specific contexts relevant to children’s encounters, and methodological approaches. This book is aimed at an international array of scholars and students with inherent research interests in the contemporary commodification of death and ‘difficult heritage’ within the visitor economy. Thus, the book will provide a multi-disciplinary scope within the fields of history, heritage studies, childhood studies, psychology, education, sociology, human geography, and tourism studies. The volume is primarily intended for undergraduate and postgraduate study, as well as scholars and tourism professionals.
