BOOK EXCERPT:

In 1936, the year Fritz Schwalm was born, Adolph Hitler had high approval ratings. Fritz’s parents supported the national socialist state, and his father was an SS officer employed in the Race and Settlement Office (Rasse and Siedlungs Hauptamt, RuSHA). The office became the focus of a military tribunal of the Nuremberg trials, and his father was sentenced to ten years in prison. Decades later, after his father’s death, Fritz discovered his diaries, penned during the first four years in captivity that included the trial. In a fascinating memoir, Fritz begins by sharing his father’s journals that detail his thoughts about Germany’s successes and failures under the Hitler regime, beginning with his internment in a camp near Hamburg, Neuengamme. In the following section, Fritz chronicles his own life growing up under the Nazi regime. After revealing how the defeat of Germany in 1945 and its consequences confronted him with traditional political and social norms, he leads others through the events of his subsequent life, rich in adventures and free choices, stark contrasts of what his life would have been in a society governed by rigid social norms and ideological biases. A Life Outside My Father’s Shadow shares the contrasting perspectives and views of a German SS officer father and his son as the events of a brutal war transformed the world.

BOOK EXCERPT:

An intimate portrait of Justice Peter Mahon, who headed the Erebus plane crash inquiry, written by his son. Described often as ‘a man for all seasons’, Justice Peter Mahon is perhaps best remembered for his role in the Erebus Inquiry: an inquiry into the worst air disaster in New Zealand’s history. In My Father’s Shadow, his eldest son, artist Sam Mahon, draws a composite portrait of Peter: a rational, moral, astute and complex character, but a father whom the author hardly knew. In poignant lyrical prose, an expansive story emerges, operatic in scope, of Peter Mahon’s life – through his war years and the Senio offensive, his distinguished legal career, to the insult keenly felt be a proud man when the Court of Appeal questioned his immortal line ‘an orchestrated litany of lies’ – as soldier, lawyer, judge, naturalist, father, colleague, husband. He was at the time of his death ‘one of the ten most admired New Zealanders’. Artfully woven throughout, the memoir exposes the dynamic and the ongoing legacy between these two strong personalities – the rebellious artist-in the- making, and his tolerant, distant and revered father. Written with a spirited clarity, startling honesty, and humour, My Father’s Shadow is a captivating and extraordinary New Zealand story.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Of all the myriad stars and celebrities Hollywood has produced, only a handful have achieved the fame - and, some would say, infamy - of Orson Welles, the creator and star of what is arguably the greatest film ever, Citizen Kane. Many books have been written about him, detailing his achievements as an artist as well as his foibles as a human being. None of them, however, has come so close to the real man as Chris Welles Feder does in this beautifully realised portrait of her father. In My Father's Shadow is a classic story of a life lived in the public eye, told with affection and the wide-eyed wonder of a daughter who never stopped believing that some day she would truly know and understand her elusive and larger-than-life father. The result is a moving and insightful look at life in the shadow of a legendary figure and an immensely entertaining story of growing up in the unreal reality of Hollywood.

BOOK EXCERPT:

In My Father's Shadow, David L. Dudley explores a line of African American men's autobiographies. starting with Frederick Douglass and moving on through Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Eldridge Cleaver, and Malcolm X. In life, these writers did not enjoy "normal" relationships with their fathers, who were all unknown, absent. or abusive. Damaged and damaging father-son relationships in childhood, Dudley contends, spill over into adult personal and artistic relationships, clouding and complicating the already complex issue of identity that lies at the core of any autobiographical endeavor. Dudley identifies a kind of intergenerational Oedipus conflict: each rising autobiographer seeks. through his text to displace his predecessor in order to gain imaginative space for himself as well as a position of authority in the black (and sometimes, white) community. As each writer strives to come to terms with the powerful father figure in the black male autobiographical tradition. he also wrestles with the larger issue of his own identity in relation to the literary and cultural traditions in which he lives and writes. Dudley also traces the triumph of these writers as they establish their own identity in the face of great personal and societal odds. My Father's Shadow is an important contribution to the study of African American literature, history, politics, and culture. It will also serve as an examination of the experiences of seven writers as they struggle with what it means to be a black man and a black writer in America.

My Shadow Is My Skin

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Iranian revolution of 1979 launched a vast, global diaspora, with many Iranians establishing new lives in the United States. In the four decades since, the diaspora has expanded to include not only those who emigrated immediately after the revolution but also their American-born children, more recent immigrants, and people who married into Iranian families, all of whom carry their own stories of trauma, triumph, adversity, and belonging that reflect varied and nuanced perspectives on what it means to be Iranian or Iranian American. The essays in My Shadow Is My Skin are these stories. This collection brings together thirty-two authors, both established and emerging, whose writing captures the diversity of Iranian diasporic experiences. Reflecting on the Iranian American experience over the past forty years and shedding new light on themes of identity, duality, and alienation in twenty-first-century America, the authors present personal narratives of immigration, sexuality, marginalization, marriage, and religion that offer an antidote to the news media’s often superficial portrayals of Iran and the people who have a connection to it. My Shadow Is My Skin illuminates a community that rarely gets to tell its own story.

He reveals the uniqueness of each angel and relates the love and care provided by each when he needed someone to encourage and stand by him on his march toward his purpose and calling in God. These individuals displayed strength and character that became an incentive for him to strive to be the best person that God ordained him to be. Without them being there, his life in the Deep South would almost definitely have taken a different direction. By the mercy of God, he encountered each of them at a time when he was in desperate need of love and encouragement to keep from fainting.
