No account is taken of manuscripts in this computation, and it is evident that, so far as the printed books are concerned, the average amount per work realised (the whole season's sales being computed) is very materially increased by the remarkable influx of expensive works to which reference has been made. In one respect the most important sale of the season was that held by Messrs. Sotheby on May 7th and following days, when the late Mr. Truman's fine collection of works illustrated by George Cruikshank, was brought to the hammer.
