Fast Guy Slows Down

BOOK EXCERPT:

Superman was first published in 1938, so how come he still looks to be about 25 years old in the stories set in 2022? Ditto for all the other superheroes from The Golden Age Of Comics still being published today. Why isn't Captain America collecting Social Security? Why isn't The Flash using a walker to get around? Why isn't The Human Torch complaining about his hip replacement? Why isn't Wonder Woman deciding what Medicare plan she wants? Why isn't Batman retired? Why isn't Plastic Man stretching his dollars to afford his nursing home bills? Why isn't The Green Lantern The Green Flashlight by now? Er, never mind about that last question. But the answer to the other ones is money. As long as the corporate comics companies can milk money out of them, these characters will be kept forever young, aside from the occasional "imaginary story" or whatnot. But in stunting their growth, only half the story gets told. What does happen when a superhero ages with the times and eventually becomes elderly? What's so super about getting old? Well, it probably beats being dead. Just ask Bucky. Er, never mind. Anyway, leave it to one of America's worstselling authors who hasn't given up yet to venture in and tell the rest of the superhero story. In the case of Harry Fox, the superhero known as Fast Guy, he finds he can't outrace time or death. His worst foe though is an existential crisis brought on by saving the world numerous times only to have it result in a shallow, selfish place populated mainly by morons and jerks, and sometimes even moronic jerks and jerky morons. Living alone in his old ranch house in a town filled with new McMansions, he is wondering what to do with himself and worrying about what will happen to the world when he is gone. And the reader is left wondering if Harry is really a superhero. Although he claims he's saved the world more times than he can remember from nuclear annihilation, he delights in pooping on world leaders, which sounds more like a supervillain, or, at the very least, a person with issues than it does a superhero. Or maybe he's just a lonely old man with a very active imagination. In a world less than super, can a senior citizen still be a hero? Find out in Fast Guy Slows Down!

The Theatre Of Love Sex Marriage And Beyond

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It is through a deep reflection that I have been able to frame the title of this book, which is The Theatre of Love, Sex, Marriage and Beyond. In fact, the contents of this book take their roots from the title. This book is designed to cover as much as possible, a substantial number of the various aspects of the subjects I have discussed, as dealt with specifically by the innumerable authors at one time or the other. It is without the slightest doubt that not all or every aspect of the subjects of love, sex, and marriagewritten or propounded by authors, researchers, psychologists, sexologists, and medical scientistscan be found in one book. These different and innumerable ideas, theories, hypothesis, and research findings are as scattered in uncountable books, articles, newsprints, or papers and magazines. I will, in all honesty, admit that what I have attempted to do in this book is only a tip of the iceberg, considering the infinitude of the intellectual input and output of others in the myriad of data on the subject. I have divided this book into four parts: love, sex, marriage, and the beyond. These notwithstanding, I hope this humble rendition, however inadequate, would give readers a general overview of the essentials of these enigmatic subjects of love, sex, marriage, and the beyond.

New Pounds And Inches

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The HCG diet has caught the attention of most overweight Americans as it promises to help the dieter lose a pound a day without hunger or cravings and without a minute of exercise. The HCG diet was conceived in 1950, by Dr. A.T. Simeons, who wrote in his booklet, Pounds and Inches, that injecting HCG, a hormone produced normally by pregnant women, could not only produce spectacular weight loss results, but at the same time "re-set" the metabolism centers in the brain permanently. Simeons' plan required daily injections of HCG, and a rigid semi-starvation 500 calorie a day diet. Although many people have been successful with the plan, an equal number have found the HCG diet difficult to follow and have increasing questions about the HCG's safety and effectiveness. In the New Pounds and Inches, Richard L. Lipman M.D., a board certified endocrinologist and internist, updates and revises Simeons' 1954 plan using modern day science and his personal experience treating thousands of patients with HCG. Dr Lipman clarifies all of the controversies surrounding the HCG diet. The New Pounds and Inches uses oral HCG, an 800 calorie food plan, protein with all three meals, many fruits, unlimited vegetables, and many more foods, beverages and snacks unavailable to Dr. Simeons. It presents a workable exercise program, a maintenance plan and concludes with hundreds of appropriate HCG recipes. The New Pounds and Inches offers a safe, effective weight loss plan that sets the standard in weight loss for both practitioners and patients.

Shots Fired

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Get a deeper understanding of police shootings through interviews with officers involved in real-life cases Today’s media is filled with discussions about officer-involved shootings. Too often missing from that discussion are the police officers’ voices and the reality of what happens in actual shooting incidents. Through actual interviews with involved officers, this book addresses common myths and misunderstandings about these shootings. Shots Fired is a journey “behind the shield” and the experiences of the real human beings behind the badge. It explores true events through the participants’ own eyes and takes readers inside the minds of officers during the actual event. The officers detail the roller coaster of emotions and severe trauma experienced during and after a shooting event. Along with the intimate, in-depth explorations of the incidents themselves, the book touches the aftermath of police-involved shootings—the debriefings, internal and external investigations, and psychological evaluations. It challenges many commonly held assumptions created by the media such as the meaning of “unarmed” and why the police can’t just “shoot him in the leg,” creating an understanding that reaches beyond slogans such as “hands up, don’t shoot.” The book is valuable reading for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of police shootings—officers and police departments, reporters and politicians, and the public who rely on the police to keep them safe.
