BOOK EXCERPT:
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic imposed immobility on large sectors of the world’s population, with confinement becoming an everyday reality. The lives of those who previously enjoyed the privileges of being ‘fast castes’ ground to a halt, while at the same time the displacement of more vulnerable populations along well-established migration corridors has been radically reduced. The result has been a recalibration of the scale of journeying, with travellers slowing down their journeys and readjusting their relationship to the proximate and nearby. This situation has provided an opportunity for those who study travel and travel writing to rethink their objects of study and approaches to them. This volume explores and historicizes the phenomenon of ‘microtravel’, designating slower journeys within a limited radius which allow, and sometimes necessitate, new forms of experiencing the world.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The past 30 years have witnessed enormous advances in information technologies. These advances have had a profound and irreversible effect on every institution of modern society. Implementing information-processing technology fell to professional experts and a relatively small cadre of managerial personnel. Responsibility for the utilization of computer technology has shifted away from these professionals, and promises to accelerate due to technological advances and reduced costs for information-processing devices. A symposium was convened in 1980 at the University of Houston to examine the recent antecedents and future consequences of these developments in information technology. Distinguished spokespersons were invited from academic science, government, and business. This book contains the papers delivered at the symposium and the concluding discussion.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The year's best travel writing, as chosen by series editor Jason Wilson and guest editor Robert Macfarlane. Writing, reading, and dreaming about travel have surged, writes Robert MacFarlane in his introduction to the Best American Travel Writing 2020. From an existential reckoning in avalanche school, to an act of kindness at the Mexican-American border, to a moral dilemma at a Kenyan orphanage, the journeys showcased in this collection are as spiritual as they are physical. These stories provide not just remarkable entertainment, but also, as MacFarlane says, deep comfort, "carrying hope, creating connections, transporting readers to other-worlds, and imagining alternative presents and alternative futures." The Best American Travel 2020 includes HEIDI JULAVITS - YIYUN LI - PAUL SALOPEK - LACY JOHNSON - EMMANUEL IDUMA - JON MOOALLEM - EMILY RABOTEAU and others

BOOK EXCERPT:
The dielectric microstructures act as ultrahigh Q factors optical cavities, which modify the spontaneous emission rates and alter the spatial distributions of the input and output radiation. The editors have selected leading scientists who have made seminal contributions in different aspects of optical processes in microcavities. Every attempt has been made to unify the underlying physics pertaining to microcavities of various shapes. This book begins with a chapter on the role of microcavity modes with additional chapters on how these microcavity modes affect the spontaneous and stimulated emission rates, enhance nonlinear optical processes, used in cavity-QED and chemical physics experiments, aid in single-molecule detection, influence the design of microdisk semiconductor lasers, and how deformed cavities can be treated with classical chaos theory.
