BOOK EXCERPT:

Since its first publication in 1988, the New Dictionary of Theology has been widely appreciated by students and readers as a trustworthy and informative guide. After almost thirty years, however, there are many new writers, issues and themes on the agenda, for theology does not stand still. Hence, this completely revised second edition includes over 400 new articles in the full set of over 800. Many of the original articles have been expanded and updated, and almost all have additional bibliographical references. Since material on biblical theology is now covered at length in IVP's New Dictionary of Biblical Theology, this volume is therefore more specifically a dictionary of historical and systematic theology. The New Dictionary of Theology: Historical and Systematic has an international team of contributors, and many are acknowledged experts in their fields. The Dictionary combines excellence in scholarship with a high standard of clarity and insight into current theological issues, yet it avoids being unduly technical. Students, teachers and ministers, as well as scholars and everyone seeking a better understanding of theology, will value it as an indispensable reference work. The volume is enhanced by a spacious and clear design, an extensive and easy-to-use cross-reference system and bibliographies which feature the best and most readily available works in English.

The Holy Spirit As Space For The Living

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In The Holy Spirit as Space for the Living, George Evans recognizes the significance of the Spirit in pneumatology within the New Testament, emphasizing the Spirit's indwelling presence as a person. However, Evans notes that the functional aspect of the Spirit as the presence of God is often overlooked. The Spirit not only gives life (ruah) but also creates space for individuals to live and thrive. This spatial understanding suggests that the Spirit constructs a unique space for born-again believers to inhabit, leading to self-awareness and a transformed lifeworld. Evans adopts a spatial hermeneutic, drawing inspiration from Jesus's encounter with Nicodemus, to explore different spatial productions and their connection to the experience of being reborn within the space of the Spirit. Through this approach, he develops a concept of Christian spatiality that expands our theological understanding and highlights space as a construct shaped by the Spirit. By considering the role of the Spirit in creating and shaping our lived experience, Evans unveils a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the Spirit and its impact on our spiritual journey.

The Marrow Of Certainty

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Assurance was a central issue for the eminent Scottish theologian-pastor Thomas Boston long before it emerged as a focal point of the theological debate in the Marrow Controversy. In The Marrow of Certainty, Chun Tse presents the first full-length study of Boston's theology of assurance in six dimensions: trinitarian, covenantal, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiastical, and sacramental. This work not only furnishes the first-ever intellectual biography of Boston in his Scottish context and controversies, but it also cross-studies the theology of the Marrow of Modern Divinity with Boston's notes. This research argues that Boston's doctrine of assurance centres on union and communion with Christ, the architectonic principle of his theology. The book challenges the common conception that Boston's theology merely follows Calvin, the Scots Confession, the Marrow, the Westminster Standards, and Scottish federalism. Boston, most strikingly, holds in tension assurance as intrinsic to faith—itself a gift from God's sovereignty in election—while insisting on self-examination as a human responsibility. This salient mark of his doctrine of assurance originates from his assertion that Christ died for the elect alone but all—elect or not—have the warrant to receive Christ. As such, assurance is, theologically, a divine gift and, pastorally, a human endeavour. Certainty is thus both extra nos and intra nos. Boston, this study reveals, has a potent and enduring power to speak on the perennial issue of assurance, rooted in the person of Christ, whom he considers as being the covenant itself.

New Dictionary Of Biblical Theology

BOOK EXCERPT:

In recent years our knowledge of the individual parts of the Bible has increased greatly, but our understanding of how they fit together has not kept pace. In particular, the relationship between the Old and New Testaments has been a neglected field of study. The latest in IVP's developing family of New Dictionaries, the 'New Dictionary of Biblical Theology' is an essential tool for students, preachers and ministers, as well as for scholars and others seeking a better grasp of the Bible's teaching. The aim of this prestigious dictionary is to integrate the various biblical books and themes into the overarching story of the Scriptures. The volume embodies three perspectives on biblical theology, which are reflected in its structure.

Religious Experience In Modern Poetry

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This study on religious experience in modern poetry features innovatory and accessible close readings of some of the most beloved authors of English verse. In today’s seemingly secular age, religion still remains a highly contested subject. The selection of texts analysed here is representative of a wide spectrum of attitudes, including a sharply critical refusal to acknowledge Christianity as the basis of civilization. Some poets see national religion as a framework for cultural identity, while others worship nature as the omnipotent Force of Life, trying to create their own gods. Rather than reducing poetry to a background for philosophical analysis or theological deliberation, this book presents diverse modes of the poetic endeavor to capture and convey the divine. The chapters provide a range of perspectives on individual experience rendered into poetry as a subtle relationship between faith, perception and language. The text will be of interest to anyone looking for new ways of reading poetry as a spiritual guest.
