The Origin Of Paul S Gospel

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In answer to Pauline scholarship that tends to explain the origin of Paul's gospel in Palestinian Judaism, Hellenistic Judaism, mystery cults, or Gnosticism, Seyoon Kim here argues that the origin lies in Paul's own testimony that he received the gospel from the revelation of Jesus Christ on the Damascus road. Only when this insistence of Paul is taken seriously, says Kim, can we really understand Paul and his theology. Kim begins his investigation of Paul's interpretation of the Damascus event by examining Paul's Rabbinic background. He then takes a more detailed look at just what occurred on the Damascus road, and follows this with a thorough discussion of Paul's gospel--the revelation, its Christology, and its soteriology--keeping in mind at all times how it relates to the Damascus event.

The Origin And Formation Of The Gospel

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book shows readers the nature of Christian faith by exploring how the gospel was originated, formed, and developed. As author Yoseop Ra demonstrates, the Christian faith began to develop during the conflict between Paul and the Jerusalem apostles, while the redemptive death of Jesus Christ on the cross, the core of the gospel, was made through theological interpretation and spiritual confession. The Origin and Formation of the Gospel offers new interpretations based on a profound analysis of sources. First, author Yoseop Ra shows Q to have been redacted four times. Second, he identifies the original form of the first Christian gospel and separates Paul's seven genuine epistles into sixteen letters. Finally, Ra offers an analysis of four Gospels and other writings to argue that the redemptive role of the cross was introduced as a breakthrough on the part of Paul to overcome the Jerusalem apostles, identifying the kingdom of God as the garden of Eden.

The Quest For Paul S Gospel

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Douglas Campbell gives a clear account of why much current description of Paul's theology, and of his gospel and of his theory of salvation, is so confused. After outlining the difficulties underlying much of the current debate he lays out some basic options that will greatly clarify the debate. He then engages with these options and shows how one offers far more promise than the others, sketching out some of its initial applications. Campbell then shows in more detail how another option -- the main alternative, and the main culprit in terms of many of our difficulties -- can be circumvented textually, in a responsible fashion. That is, we see how we could remove this option from Paul's text exegetically, and so reach greater clarity. Finally, he concludes with a 'road-map' of where future, more detailed, research into Paul needs to go if the foregoing strategy is to be carried out thoroughly. Campbell believes that by utilising this strategy Paul's gospel will be shown to be both cogent and constructive. This is volume 274 in the Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement series.

The Composition Of John S Gospel

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Readers of the Fourth Gospel have always been moved to the use of superlatives in its exposition. The most fascinating of the Gospels, in so many ways, has been the subject of enquiry by many of the best minds in biblical scholarship in the past decades, and this is amply illustrated in the pages of Novum Testamentum. This selection of essays on John presents a tapestry of critical insights into the origins and composition of the Gospel from the hands of many of the world's leading Johannine scholars writing since the Second World War. A number of these articles have been seminal for a generation of scholarship in the field. Taken together they constitute a treasury of insights and a representative grounding in the critical study of the Gospel since Bultmann.

John The Martyr S Gospel

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume makes a contribution to interpretation of this Gospel focusing attention on the Gospel itself as a series of conversations between the early Christian prophet and his immediate audience, the charismatic leaders and their followers in the churches of Judea and Jerusalem before the war with Rome, A.D. 66-70. The context of these conversations is one of great danger, often of martyrdom, which impelled the spirit-guided prophet to address to his charismatic colleagues these messages from the risen Lord. The book analyzes the central thrust of these messages, provoking fresh encounters between modern readers and the ancient author.

The Gospel History And Its Transmission

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from The Gospel History and Its Transmission The more we investigate the early history of the Christian Church with open and unprejudiced eyes, the more we find ourselves in a strange world, dominated by fixed ideas that are not our fixed ideas and permeated by an intellectual atmosphere quite different from ours. We come to ourselves, and we rub our eyes and wonder if what we have been gazing upon ever had any reality. It was for the student in this state of mind that my book was written. What I have attempted to shew is, that at least the Gospel according to 5. Mark is in touch with the actual condition of Palestine in the times of the Herods; and, further, that the course of events in the second century enables us to understand some of the reasons which led the Church to cherish on the whole a historical, as distinct from an ideal, account of the foundation of Christianity. Paul S Faith And The Power Of The Gospel

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Daniel Patte here offers a fresh literary-critical introduction to the dominant literature of the New Testament, the major letters of the apostle Paul: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and Philemon. Patte invites the reader to explore these letters through several readings: an historical reading in which he reviews and critiques the results of traditional interpretations, and structural readings in which he elucidates the main characteristics of Paul's faith and discerns a system of convictions that supports Paul's theology and gives it coherence. Through this novel literary approach, Professor Patte leads the reader of these letters to a better understanding of the power of the Gospel, the relation of the Gospel to Judaism, and Paul's interpersonal view of faith. Here is an invitation to rediscover Paul's faith in all its richness!
