It is often assumed that picturebooks are for very young readers because of their emphasis on the illustrations and their scarcity of text; however, there are increasing numbers of picturebooks where the age of the implied reader is questionable. These are picturebooks whose controversial subject matter and unconventional, often unsettling style of illustration challenge the reader, pushing them to question and probe deeper to understand what the book is about. In addition to the book challenging the reader, the reader often challenges the book in an attempt to understand what is being said. These increasingly popular picturebooks work on many different levels; they are truly polysemic and worthy of in-depth analysis. They push the reader to ask questions and in many instances are intrinsically philosophical, often dealing with fundamental life issues. Challenging and Controversial Picturebooks examines these unconventional, non-conformist picturebooks, considering what they are, their audience and their purpose. It also considers: Children’s and adults’ thoughts on these kinds of picturebooks. How challenging and unsettling wordless picturebooks can play with the mind and promote philosophical thought. What creates non-conformity and strangeness ... is it the illustrations and their style, the subject matter or a combination of both? Why certain countries create, promote and accept these picturebooks more than others. Why certain picturebooks are censored and what factors are in play when these decisions are made. The role of publishers in translating and publishing these picturebooks. Children’s creative and critical responses to strange, unsettling and often disturbing visual texts. This inspiring and thought-provoking volume explores the work of a number of highly respected, international picturebook experts and includes an exclusive interview with the legendary Klaus Flugge, Managing Director of Andersen Press, one of the few remaining independent children’s book publishers in England. It is an indispensable reference for all interested in or working with picturebooks, including researchers, students in higher and teacher education, English advisors/inspectors, literacy consultants and classroom teachers.

Danish Folktales, Legends, and Other Stories is a collection of translated and annotated Nordic folklore that presents full repertoires of five storytellers along with extensive archival material. The printed book presents some of the most compelling stories of these five important storytellers along with historical and biographical introductions. Of a length suitable for course use, it provides a substantive and enjoyable encounter with Danish folklore. The Danish Folklore Nexus on the accompanying DVD includes the storytellers' full repertoires plus 500 additional stories in both Danish and English along with essays on the changing political, social, and economic landscapes of nineteenth-century Denmark, the history of folklore scholarship, critical approaches to folklore, and comprehensive biographies of the storytellers. It also provides links between related stories and interactive maps that allow readers to see where the stories are set and where they were collected, and a mechanism to search for themes and topics across all the stories. The basis of the work is the collection of Evald Tang Kristensen (1843-1929). As a young schoolteacher Kristensen set out across Denmark to collect the folktales, ballads, legends, and stories that he saw as the vestiges of a disappearing folk culture. Over the course of five decades he collected thousands of stories and kept detailed biographical notes about the storytellers he met. The Giants of Russian Literature: The Greatest Russian Novels, Stories, Plays, Folk Tales & Legends' encapsulates an unprecedented span of Russian literary achievement, weaving through the transformative arcs of realism, romanticism, and the philosophical introspection characteristic of Russia's literary evolution. This anthology is meticulously curated, offering a spectrum from the dense, existential inquiries of Dostoevsky to the nuanced, social narratives of Chekhov, and the fantastical realms envisioned by Pushkin. The diversity in literary styles, from the poignant short stories of Saki (H.H. Munro) to the grand, epic novels and plays that have defined the ethos of an era, demonstrates the rich tapestry of Russian and related cultures contributions to global literature. The collective works included stand as a testament to the depth and variety of human experience as depicted in literary form, with each piece selected for its timeless relevance and profound impact. The contributing authors and editors of this anthology, leaders amongst the pantheon of Russian literary figures, bring a breadth of cultural, historical, and political context to the fore. Such variety encapsulates pivotal moments in literary and world history, from the intricacies of Tsarist Russia to the turbulent shifts of the Soviet era and beyond. The assembly of authors like Tolstoy, Gorky, and Andreyev, alongside less universally recognized yet equally pivotal figures such as Korolenko and Garshin, offers a panoramic view of the seismic shifts in literary expression and the socio-political undercurrents of their times. Their lives and works serve as prisms through which the broader narratives of Russian and global history can be explored, enriching the anthology with layers of complexity and insight. This anthology is not just a collection of significant works; it is a gateway to exploring the soulful depths, philosophical ponderings, and the reckonings with the human condition that Russian literature so adeptly explores. It invites readers into a rich dialogue across time and space, encouraging a deep and nuanced understanding of the themes that pervade Russian literary history. 'The Giants of Russian Literature' is an essential volume for anyone keen to immerse themselves in the profound narratives and diverse voices that have shaped not only Russian literature but also the world literary landscape. Its educational value and the breadth of insights it offers make it an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and enthusiasts eager to explore the complexities of life and humanity through the lens of one of the worlds most prolific literary traditions.

Latino Americans have a powerful voice in society and a wealth of cultural traditions. Fundamental to those traditions are numerous folktales. Some are funny, some draw upon the supernatural, some look back on ancestral ways, and some capture the experience of Latinos in the United States. Written expressly for students and general readers, this book assembles and comments on a wide range of Latino American folktales. These are grouped in topical sections on origins; heroes, heroines, villains, and fools; society and conflict; and the supernatural. Each tale is introduced by a headnote, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography of print and electronic resources suitable for student research. Students of literature and language will value this book for its exploration of Latino American folktales, while students of history and society will welcome its illumination of the Latino American experience. The more than 30 tales are grouped in thematic sections on origins; heroes, heroines, villains, and fools; society and conflict; and the supernatural.

This book is a study of the 'mothers' of the mystery genre. Traditionally the invention of crime writing has been ascribed to Poe, Wilkie Collins and Conan Doyle, but they had formidable women rivals, whose work has been until recently largely forgotten. The purpose of this book is to 'cherchez les femmes', in a project of rediscovery.
