Parenting Our Children In A Changing World

BOOK EXCERPT:

During the last several generations, developments in the field of education and child guidance have begun to corroborate a set of ideas and observations presented here, which were first presented in Europe during the first third of the last century and refined during the last third. Many of these concepts, which were controversial when first suggested, are now being further developed and are becoming generally accepted by modern psychologists and educators. The focal point for corrective child-raising procedures has shifted toward changing the interaction between parent and child as the fact that parents often need specific instruction in child-raising has found wider acceptance. Today we need-and are developing-new traditions for raising children, which will better conform to the democratic principles for family living which now define and give meaning to the location we now all occupy in the process of democratic evolution in our society. Although many parents may realize that children cannot be treated as they were in the past, they do not know what else to do when children misbehave. Following the specific suggestions which are summarized in this book, many parents have discovered for themselves that these ways to reach children and win their cooperation do indeed work well. As this information, which includes specific methods, has been used and tested by parents for the solution of family problems, it has become evident that the system and procedures are effective. But why do children act as they do? And why do these methods enable parents to succeed? The information included in this book was designed to answer these and related questions as well as to present a set of principles in a form readily usable by parents in the home, teachers in the classroom, and other adults in other circumstances and situations.

You Your Child In A Changing World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Tick, tick says the clock; The clock ticks in seconds, in minutes, hours, then onto days and weeks; from weeks to months and then to years; years pass onto centuries; then to millennia. The journey of man, in the same vein, begins from the fetus; then grows to childhood, a young adult and to a full grown individual. Change transcends from conception to the birth; sometimes it is born daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly but surely it {change} goes on and on. The world changes from the smallest community, continuously like the hand of the clock, sometimes in ways that are unpredictable as to stop the frequency of such a change. The birth and growth of a next generation is paramount and independent of the changes that go on. Therefore, even if the formula for successfully grooming a 3G child in a 3G world may differ, the Principles for breeding a successful and constructive generation should be same regardless of the altitude and magnitude of change - even the methods of application may vary. Rudolf Dreikurs M D Adlerian Psychology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Rudolf Dreikurs, MD, was an Australian-born American psychiatrist and educator, who lived from 1897 to 1972. He originally helped to develop the Australian psychologist Alfred Adler's ideas called individual psychology into a pragmatic method for understanding the purposes of inappropriate childhood behavior without punishment or reward. He worked with Dr. Adler both in Europe and in the United States and later organized and refined Dr. Adler's and his own ideas into an effective treatment system. These insights and treatment methods were then further refined by Dr. Dreikurs during the remainder of his life to become a highly usable theory of personality and psychological treatment, not only for use with children but also with families, counselors, teachers, and others, including groups. The content of this book summarizes the results of his commitment and mission in doing this work as he created, tested, refined, and applied these concepts in creation of methods for understanding and treatment of a wide variety of behavior problems and disorders common in families worldwide. He also trained people to use these methods in various countries throughout the world. In doing so, he adapted and applied his knowledge in work with business, industry and government, including the military. The ideas and methods contained in this volume are easily understood and may be applied immediately by parents and their families, by teachers in classrooms, and by others -- now, today -- with valuable positive results. The chapters in this book provide a distillation of logical techniques and procedures, for productive application of his original insights including those originated by Dr. Adler and others. Dr. Camp had the honor to meet Dr. Dreikurs in 1970, two years before his death. At that time Dr. Dreikurs told him and a few others that if he had their youth, he would write another book or books to further update and share his insights with new/upcoming generations. This volume is part of an attempt to do exactly that.

Raising World Changers In A Changing World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Almost any parent you asked would tell you that they want their children to be happy, successful adults. But many of us forget (or never knew to begin with) that lasting personal joy is not necessarily found the way the world says it is--through reaching a certain socioeconomic status, having a certain job, buying a certain house, or having a certain amount in one's bank account. In fact, says Kristen Welch, popular blogger and author of Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World, personal satisfaction comes not from grabbing onto things but from holding them with an open hand and, very often, giving them away. In this inspiring book, Welch shows parents how to discover for themselves and instill in their kids the profound joy that comes from sharing what we have been given--our time, our talents, and even what's in our wallets--with those who have less. Through powerful personal stories as well as stories from Scripture, Welch offers a tantalizing alternative to status quo parenting that has the power to impact not only our own families but the entire world. At the end of each chapter, one of the author's kids offers their perspective on what it's like to be raised as a world changer.

Understanding And Managing The Difficult Child

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

While working with parents and children for nearly half a century, it has become increasingly evident that the Adlerian child psychology methods as outlined in this book are effective when applied to family conflicts. They have been tested by numerous teachers, counselors, and others in many locations over many years. Many parents have discovered for themselves that these strategies engage their children and win their cooperation. Still, parents often do not know why children act as they do or why they succeed or fail. The information and recommendations in this book are based on a philosophy of life and concept of human nature and behavior first presented by Alfred Adler, Rudolph Dreikurs, and others. The parenting methods they recommended have become increasingly accepted and used during recent decades in Europe and North America. They do not suggest either permissiveness or punishment but instead methods for use by parents, which emphasize wise guidance of children without either overcontrolling them or stifling their creative spirit. With more secure knowledge of what to do, parents can improve their parenting using techniques and strategies that work. Parents are too often faced with child-raising challenges for which they are not prepared. Just as the child needs training, so do parents. Ideas presented in the pages of this book suggest new ways to respond to a child’s provocations that can lead to new attitudes and parental behaviors. These can and often do lead, in turn, to new and productive approaches and methods that allow more harmonious relationships to develop. But why do children act as they do? And why do these methods enable parents to succeed? The information included in this volume was designed to answer these and related questions as well as to present a set of principles in a form readily usable by parents in the home, teachers in the classroom, and other adults in other circumstances and situations.

Ethnicity Religion And Muslim Education In A Changing World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This novel and contemporary anthology brings important topics about race, religion, and identity to the foreground to address the challenges facing Muslim schoolchildren today. Through interviews and case studies, the chapters explore topics such as multiethnic education, teacher diversity, and culturally responsive pedagogy, providing insights into necessary changes and ways to enhance schools. Taking into account cultural touchstones such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the Trojan Horse affair, the book argues for an urgent, transformative accommodation of Muslims to take place within schooling in order to improve the educational standards of Muslim children within the United Kingdom, including several chapters that focus on Muslim education in locations such as Yorkshire, Peterborough, High Wycombe, and Tower Hamlets, and further afield. This book will be of importance to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students studying religious education, secondary education, and multicultural education more broadly. Policymakers interested in education policy and politics, as well as race and ethnicity in educational contexts, may potentially benefit from the volume.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING ABOUT IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD(R) -- TRANSCENDING BOUNDARIES? HERE ARE A FEW REVIEWS: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ATTORNEYS FOR CHILDRENS RIGHTS J. STEVEN SVOBODA, ESQUIRE RENDERS FAVORABLE VERDICT FOR FATHERHOOD BOOK BERKELEY, CA. 19 September 2004 He is the Executive Director and Founder of Attorneys for the Rights of the Child, a Board Member and Public Relations Director of the National Coalition of Free Men and a member of The Mens Center Advisory Council. He is J. Steven Svoboda, Esquire. Svoboda, who recently completed his review of In Search Of Fatherhood -- Transcending Boundaries has rendered a favorable verdict. Mr. Svoboda had the following things to say about In Search Of Fatherhood -- Transcending Boundaries which is authored by Diane A. Sears, a member of the University Council for Akamai Universitys Fatherhood and Mens Studies Program and the Managing Editor of a quarterly international male parenting journal IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD FORUM FOR AND ABOUT THE FATHERS OF THE WORLD: BSI International, still a relatively new player in pro-male publishing, has been putting out its IN SEARCH OF FATHERHOOD Forum For and About the Fathers of the World for well over half a decade. Now BSI has released this fascinating and wide-ranging volume collecting 17 pieces by 16 contributors, all focused in one way or other on the ever-important issue of fatherhood. I personally read it cover to cover on a recent plane flight. Svoboda stated. BSIs publicationsboth its journal and this book--have a unique flavor. For one thing, substantial representation is given to men of color. Its authors vary in literary skill though everything it publishes is engaging and easy to follow. Some of its articles tend to have a somewhat politically reactionary flavor though despite my own personal largely progressive background, I dont view this as a negative factor, Svoboda continued. At the same time, BSIs style is very male in its sensibility: stories are put out there as the authors see them, with no apologies and no punches pulled. Many of BS
